Today Claire Birchall’s exceptional new album THE HAUNTING is out.

Claire Birchall returns with a new solo album of dark & personal pop songs. A “gothic” tapestry of carefully articulated layered melodies adorned with intricate vocal patterns. The Haunting is an emotionally complex album. Inspired by nightmares, fairy tales and ghost stories, exploring themes of fear, loss and anxiety. Blurring the boundaries between rock and pop, electronic and analogue. Traversing a heady mix of genre, tempo. Invoking everything from edgy disco to anguished torch song.

In the past few days we have lost two members of the It Records family. Ollie Olsen of Taipan Tiger Girls and Andrew Picouleau of The Metronomes. I am honestly quite heartbroken. These incredible artists were wonderful human beings whom I loved, and I will miss them both. It’s been lovely to see the outpouring of affection and respect for them in the last 24hrs. I will add my voice to that when I can find the words. In the meantime listen to their music. Lots of love to you all x Kate

We couldn’t choose just one single to tease you with ahead of Claire Birchall’s new album The Haunting (out next week), so we’re giving you two! A double single out today: Sink or Swim / Mirror, Mirror. The two tracks reflect the breadth of emotion and the diversity of songcraft on this extraordinary album. “Sink or Swim” is a sad, dark ballad tracing out the tale of the demise of a relationship. It features a 100 year old pump organ, layered with synths and piercing guitar stabs. “Mirror Mirror” in contrast is tinted with New Wave vibes, loaded with handclaps and bouncy vintage synth sounds. A song about social anxiety but it’s upbeat...kind of.

Claire is playing the first show of her national tour with Smoked Salmon TONIGHT at George Lane in St Kilda followed by The Wheatsheaf Hotel in Adelaide on Sunday. Brisbane, Sydney, Perth and more in the next few weeks. Claire is both playing these shows as a solo artist and as the guitarist for Smoked Salmon (led by seminal garage punk icon Kim Salmon).
