It's not every day that you get to see an Amtrak train that's almost a whole DAY late! Dangerous wind gusts stopped Amtrak's eastbound California Zephyr in Colorado over the weekend, and by the time it was let through it was over 22 hours behind schedule. I caught the train finally arriving into Ottumwa, Iowa shortly after sunrise this morning. Amtrak's first "Phase VII" P42 locomotive 174 led the way, followed by the Phase I "heritage" unit 161.

Last week, I caught BNSF's local freight train 664 departing Ottumwa, Iowa, as the sun set on March 30th. Leading the train was a pair of ex-Santa Fe Warbonnet locomotives! Three more BNSF units as well as a Ferromex SD70ACe were also on the train.

Amtrak's latest P42 in the new "Phase VII" paint scheme came through leading the California Zephyr last night. Here's my video of the train as it arrived in Ottumwa, Iowa shortly after sunset. Now ready to view is my latest completed, feature-length program, "Across the Iowa Interstate 3"! This video features Iowa Interstate's QJ steam engine 6988 on its final year of excursions before its mandatory FRA boiler inspection, running trains out of Wilton and Des Moines, Iowa. I also caught the engine making its final run to Silvis in June 2022, between Grinnell and Iowa City. Later that year in November, Union Pacific ran its last batch of donated equipment on the IAIS to the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America in Silvis, and I chased the movement between South Amana and Davenport. On November 27th, I happened upon some activity on the Iowa Southern Railway around Moravia, IA. This video features the combination of two movements after switching in town, as they continue south towards Centerville.
