August 14, 2020: I think it comes down to cost. Trying to get the product you want without the price tag is always the biggest challenge. If you’re not limited by a budget you can do pretty much whatever you want with relative ease. We shop around a lot, get multiple quotes and really spend the time deciding what are the most important and noticeable improvements we can make that will positively impact on the customer experience without breaking the bank. Things like replacing old skylights with new (for more natural light), moving to LED downlights, polishing the concrete floors, and more recently installing carpeted mats—those have been some of our top priorities. We also took the time to design the boulder walls and general fit out in such a way that it not only feels spacious and bright but also in a way that ensured the vast majority of the old warehouse features were hidden behind a new façade.

Today Roy Quanstrom and host John Burgman wade into the wide waters of sustainability, and more specifically sustainability in the climbing holds sector. There's always more to say on such a big topic, and there are many hold brands and manufacturers coming together to drive the industry forward, but Roy packs a lot of valuable insights from his perspective as a setter, shaper and facility sales coordinator at Trango into this conversation.

It’s the season of professional development and industry education in North America, with two trade shows in the coming few months. Expo sessions announced below for setters and owners, and the CWA Summit’s schedule is still filling out with great stuff for all gym staffers. Plus a new online setting education platform launched this week.

October 20, 2014: Many people just wanted to see what an indoor climbing facility was like, but weren’t ready to take part. As a method of grabbing attention, Cowles had a 40 foot tall Entreprise competition wall built in front of his gym on a public parking structure. He was able to get the city’s support, who provided him with “a special lease to infinity on the airspace” in front of his gym where the outdoor wall currently stands. This type of “innovation, initiative and civic responsiveness” earned Cowles the 2014 Small Business Leader of the Year Award by the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce.
