Mini Bonus Episode! 🎉 During the recording of our “For the Love of Books and More” episode, Lauren ran into some technical difficulties. Her computer crashed several times. 😩 Even though she was gone for a few minutes, Leah and Mandy kept talking. This bonus episode is their conversation in Lauren’s absence. Enjoy!

Episode 36: Jacob Have I Loved

In this episode of Reading the Newberys, we discuss the winner of the 1981 Newbery Medal “Jacob Have I Loved” by Katherine Paterson. Our discussion does get into some slightly mature themes (coming of age/sexual awakening), so use your own judgement if you are listening while little ears are present. We hope you enjoy this discussion of Katherine Paterson’s second Newbery Medal winning book! (Age recommendation for this book: 13 and up)

Join us in wishing a very happy birthday to the part of Team Friendship that keeps us organized and on track! She has the difficult job of making sure Leah and Mandy stay on topic and puts up with our shenanigans! She also spends hours editing our episodes, so she has the privilege of listening to our voices over, and over, and over, and over, and...well, you get it. 😉 Happy Birthday to you, Lauren!! We love you so much!! 💜📚

Read-a-likes!

Kate DiCamillo and Katherine Paterson are two of our favorite authors. In our most recent episode of Reading the Newberys, we all agreed that “Walk Two Moons” by Sharon Creech gave us “Kate vibes.”

But there were two other books that came to mind as well:

“The Line Tender” by Kate Allen (Another Kate! 😀)

and

“The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise” by Dan Gemeinhart

Have you read these books? Do you have a favorite Kate DiCamillo or Katherine Paterson book?

In our most recent episode of Reading the Newberys, we discuss Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech. In the story, Salamanca is very proud of her American Indian heritage, so we wanted to share some books about the Native American experience that are written by Native American authors.

The Sea in Winter by Christine Day

In the Footsteps of Crazy Horse by Joseph Marshall III

I Can Make this Promise by Christine Day

Indian No More by Charlene Willing McManis and Traci Sorell

Red, White, and Whole by Rajani LaRocca

Indian Shoes by Cynthia Leitich Smith

Ancestor Approved: Intertribal Stories for Kids edited by Cynthia Leitich Smith

In our most recent episode on “Secret of the Andes” by Anne Nolan Clark, we shared some related titles:

“Julie of the Wolves” kept coming into my mind as I was reading. In “Secret of the Andes”, how Cusi and Chuto stewarded their land and cared for their animals reminded me of the respect that Julie and her family had for nature.

If you enjoyed “Secret of the Andes” or you are interested in Inca culture or Peru, these picture books are great.

“Maria had a Little Llama” is told in both English and Spanish.

“The Rainforest Grew All Around” is a poem, but it also includes facts about the plants and animals that grow and live in the Amazon Rainforest on each page. It even has a cookie recipe in the back that uses ingredients we can find in the Amazon Rainforest: sugar, cinnamon, coconut, chocolate, vanilla, banana, and cashews.

“You Wouldn’t Want to Be an Inca Mummy!” is a fun book for kids 7 and up. It is part of the “You Wouldn’t Want to Be” series of books about historical facts.

These are just a few of the books we shared in our episode. Head to the link in the comments to check out our show notes for a full list of related titles!

“‘You are lonely, yes?’ asked Maggie in her soft voice.
Sarah’s eyes filled with tears. Slowly I stirred the dough.
Maggie reached over and took Sarah’s hand.
‘I miss the hills of Tennessee sometimes,’ she said.
Do not miss the hills, Maggie, I thought.
‘I miss the sea,’ said Sarah.”
