A note from Katerina: Recently, I applied for an entrepreneurship visa in Denmark so I could live with my partner—and found out it was rejected. Our work at Spectacle was judged by three white men who deemed “the demand for this special area regarding inclusivity has not been proven in Denmark.” When I outlined the struggles that immigrant, female-identifying, and Muslim people are currently facing in Denmark, one judge retorted, “Denmark has been one of the first countries to offer free language learning to immigrants. The applicant may have their views on this, however it’s basically not enough for an innovative business model.”

Their feedback encapsulates the white fragility, “colonial amnesia” (see: half of Danes say racism isn’t a problem in Denmark), and desire for marginalized people to assimilate into white culture (see: “No Ghettos in 2030”, Denmark’s plans to eradicate non-Western immigrant communities who are “not properly integrating” into Danish society).

I’m tired of having to prove the worth of inclusivity. Of having to present financial data, social/economic/political research, and business analyses to build a case for the unarguable truth that we urgently need to build a world where all people are safe, valued, and cared for. And I’m saddened that this work, overflowing with such light, empowerment, abundance, love, and revolution was met with defensiveness & dismissal.

As devastated as I am to receive the rejection, it reminds me that I am on the right path. At Spectacle, we shift the DE&I mindset from one of scarcity & fear, to one of abundance, expansion, and curiosity. (An example in this case: “We don’t have a problem in Denmark” → “Imagine the possibilities for a better world if we started incorporating inclusive thinking!”) This work is not hyper-scalable, Silicon-Valley-unicorn-startup-gold—it’s the slow, intentional work of changing hearts & minds. And it reminds me that we were never meant to look to oppressive systems for validation, or fit into their models of success—we were always meant to build something new.

Thank you to the team at for welcoming us with open arms! 🇩🇰 DIS is a Scandinavian-based study abroad program, who reached out to us to lead a custom “Inclusive Marketing 101” workshop for their marketing & design team. We helped lay the groundwork for foundational DE&I concepts, workshopped the balance between showcasing diverse stories & properly representing the student body, shared best practices for inclusive language & imagery; and dove into juicy, generative discussion on how to make students of color feel safe & welcomed in fairly homogenous countries.

We left our workshop with DIS feeling full & energized—and can’t wait to continue preaching the gospel of inclusivity, worldwide 🌎

With so much to plan for the new year, it can feel like a scramble to gather collaborators for your inclusivity content—and not only is rushing stressful, but it can also cause harm to the folks you're hoping to include in your campaigns. Here are a few of our tips for building long-lasting creator partnerships with intentionality + care:

⚡️ Get on the same page: Ensure your team is aligned on which days or months of acknowledgment make sense to “celebrate” on your channels given your mission, values, and audience. Then, decide on your POV and what you want to share for each.
⚡️ Planning is key! No one wants to feel like an afterthought, or like they're being tokenized for their identity. Get to know your content creators well, understand their passions + goals + intentions, and ensure you're uplifting their true perspectives. Take time for collaborative content reviews, and build a trusting relationship over time.
⚡️ You can't pay bills with exposure: This may seem like a no-brainer, but monetary compensation is best when it comes to paying content creators—otherwise, make sure you're offering a product or service that's worthwhile. Creating an equitable value exchange is the right thing to do 🙌

In honor of , we're excited to share our partnership with 5280 Fast Track Cities: a initiative that’s part of a global effort to reach 95-95-95 by 2030 (ensuring 95% of people living with HIV have been diagnosed and are aware of their status; 95% of people living with diagnosed HIV are in care; and 95% of people engaged in HIV care have suppressed viral loads).

While there have been incredible advances in medicine over the past few decades to ensure people living with HIV can live long, healthy, and fulfilling lives, there remains harmful stigma against people with the virus. We’ve had the privilege of working alongside an inspiring & vibrant community group to create an anti-stigma campaign, new website, and go-to-market strategy for this life-changing initiative. Follow their upcoming launch at 🌞

This campaign was created in partnership with .corn (website, brand design) + .media (video production, photography) + the Denver Health / 5280 FTC team. ⚡️

We’re canceling our 4-year dance party. 😔 The venue requirements were nuts, and in revisiting the vows we made to each other when we got “married” as business partners, we realized we were moving away from our values of working with spaciousness, intention, abundance, rest, and pleasure.
