The episode that you have waited a year and a half for is finally here! As you listen you’ll find out that it may also be the last one for a while. It’s definitely one of our longest, but we feel it’s worth it! Thank you all for being so amazing throughout this journey and we hope you’ll join us again in the future as we navigate What the What!? One of the best parts of podcasting (out side of working with friends and talking about stuff we liked) was interactions with listeners! This podcast allowed us to discuss almost everything with anyone and it brought a ton of different people into my life, both new and old friends!

We had a ton of five star reviews, lots of guest stars, and each week we got to see your opinions on our topic of the week!

What was your favorite episode? What kind of episodes did you like? Did you enjoy the tournaments? How about the different drafts we did? Were you a bigger fan of our music episodes? Did you enjoy the deep dives into the MCU? What about our blast from the last 90s episodes? What are some topics that we never covered that you wish we had?

Let’s interact one more time. Drop your thoughts and comments down below and let us know what you think and feel! And be sure to check out the end of this era of What The What on Monday!

Alright. I guess it’s my turn now. Kyle that is. Around 12 years ago at my work I sat in an office beside Justin Faucette and I thought he was listening to a talk show of some sort, but he explained to me that it was a podcast. I was oblivious to things, but he told me about all of the amazing podcasts that were out there on any topic that you could dream of. From there forward I began listening to podcasts for 8-10 hours a day while at work, (mostly about comic books and Batman). Even with all of that listening experience I never thought that I would be a part of a podcast myself one day. I'm not famous, who would want to hear anything from me?

Well fast forward to 2018/2019 when Eric Creech started talking to me about making a podcast of our own. A lot of it came down to, "hey it would be fun!" Sure, we aren't famous, but it would be fun to talk about things we love and if someone else wanted to listen in and talk about it too, that's even better! We definitely stunk at first. As said a billion times... Ignore the Toy Story episode! But over the years we really started having fun with it and it seems like some of you did too! Some were more vocal about our topics than others, and that's where Ashby Brame came into the picture!

I'll never forget the day that she joined us for a guest episode and once she left I turned to Eric and said "she needs to be on every episode!" Even though she tried to push for just being on here or there, we just kept telling her when each episode was recording and what time to be there. Thankfully she kept showing up!

For every episode that we recorded there was at least an hour of unrecorded conversation about life. Sometimes happy. Sometimes sad. Sometimes angry and sometimes all of them combined. We were 3 people that came together to talk about topics that we all loved and after all this time we became a family.

Next Monday we will be releasing a new episode of the podcast and I'm not really sure where the future will lead after that. That being said, I'm feeling very optimistic about a lot of possibilities that are to come. You'll just have to hang around to find out! Until then... WHAT THE WHAT!?

I thought I’d jump in on Eric’s beautiful tribute posts this week as we close out a chapter, not the whole book, in what has been a hobby, an endeavor, a blessing, a friendship, and a side hustle for many these past few years. 🎉

There was What the What?! before Ashby and there was What the What?! after Ashby. That’s not a brag. It is simply a fact. I can only hope that I did as I promised - when I came for Eric and Kyle in their own YouTube live chat - and provided a “female voice” to the podcast they had birthed together. I didn’t say it to be critical. I said it as an offering. I did not say it because I wanted to fall head first into co-hosting a podcast. And yet, that’s exactly what happened. It was everything I didn’t know I needed at the time. 🎧

Friendship has always been more important to me than almost anything else in my life. It has sustained me and surprised me and given me immeasurable joy. The friendship I share with these 2 dudes did all of that. It has been a balm and a distraction in years when I needed both. More than I’ve enjoyed recording What the What?! with them, I’ve enjoyed sharing our lives. Watching Kyle become a father. Watching Eric become a husband. How fortunate I’ve been to share in the conversations we’ve had when the mics aren’t recording, just as much as when they are. 🎙️

It’s been a ride. It’s brought people back into my life I didn’t even know I’d missed. The things we’ve accomplished, the memes we’ve memed, the arguments and the laughter, the meals and the text chain… y’all should see the text chain. 🤣

Next week we’ll be dropping a special episode entitled Stay as Cool as the Other Side of the Pillow. And we hope you love it. We hope you understand. We hope you have enjoyed the chapter and that you’re still invested in turning the page on whatever comes next! 🧡

P.S. here’s some of those memes, just one more time for the road…

Running a podcast wasnt the easiest thing to do. There is so much planning and preparation that goes into recording. It could have very easily been overwhelming. Thankfully, we had help.

Rickie was more than just help. He was basically a lifeguard - he kept us from drowning. He let us record at his house, he played technical engineer, he would troubleshoot problems, give us ideas…he even sat in as a co-host for a few episodes. The podcast would have died very early on if it had not been for Rickie and the support he gave us. Check out the Full House parody video we did during the pandemic!

Speaking of which, right before the pandemic, Kyle and I had run this Disney/Pixar bracket tournament (more on that later.) This was our first real foray into doing a live YouTube show, with streaming. In the comments, fighting for her favorites (like Brave) was someone who would do her own part to change our podcasts - Ashby Brame!

We invited her to be a part of our Captain America: The First Avenger podcast and during the episode, when Ashby was dropping her pearls of wisdom, I remember looking at Kyle and we both had the same thought - we need to get her to record with us as much as possible.

Ashby was insistent that eventually she would go back to traveling a lot for her job and she probably couldn’t join us full time, but with the pandemic going on a lot longer than any of us ever thought, and her expertise and fun that she brought to the podcast, she became a regular and the third part of the podcasting tripod.

Ashby breathed new energy in the podcast, and it’s unlikely we would have continued on as long as we did without her creativity and perspective.

Rickie and Ashby are What The What heroes! For the next week, I’ll be posting stories and behind the scene photos from the past four years. Next Monday, after a long hiatus, returns with one final chapter discussing what we’ve been up to, where life has taken us, our memories of this incredible journey, and a tease into where we hope the next story begins. Join Ashby, Kyle, and myself next Monday for our next episode, “Stay As Cool As The Other Side of the Pillow.” And in the meantime, enjoy these great behind the scene photos of the four of us playing with Matt Starling’s MCU props!

In late 2018/early 2019, Kyle Whitley and I were talking about starting a pop culture podcast. This was nothing new, we had been throwing the idea around for the past couple of years. We knew we could do it. We had been making entertaining videos for church and we both had the passion and knowledge of the pop culture world to do something fun. But we had never pulled the trigger on actually doing something. And after a couple of years of talking about it, I told Kyle, “We have six months. If we don’t do anything within the next six months, we will never do it. It’s now, or never.”

Over the next six months, Kyle researched recording equipment, wires, headphones, microphones, and other technical stuff that I couldn’t tell you about. I researched editing, podcast hosting, distribution, and starting a document with some potential topics and names.

In June 2019, 6 months later, we went over to Rickie’s house and we started to put together equipment. Thank goodness we were at Rickie’s, because he knew how to work everything and had cables we didn’t know we would need. We also came up with a schedule of topics and, through sheer happenstance, I said “What The What!?” as a joke…and that was the name that stuck.

A couple of weeks later, we were set up in the podcast room and we started recording our first episode, Toy Story. And it was bad. Like, really bad, to the point where we tell people to not listen to it kind of bad. But we did it. We had started a podcast.

It was the first chapter in a story that spanned four years. For the next week, I’ll be posting stories and behind the scene photos from the past four years. Next Monday, after a long hiatus, What The What returns with one final chapter discussing what we’ve been up to, where life has taken us, our memories of this incredible journey, and a tease into where we hope the next story begins. Join Ashby, Kyle, and myself next Monday for our next episode, “Stay As Cool As The Other Side of the Pillow.”

Walker Texas Ranger night was family night in the Brame household, as you've likely heard Ashby talk about on the pod. Kyle and Eric might better know Clarence for his role in Die Hard. Either way, sad to hear of his passing.

It’s with great sadness to hear of the passing of a dear friend and co-star, Clarence Gilyard. For nearly a decade we had many great times working together and we both loved bringing the bad guys to justice. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and children. You will be deeply missed by all who knew you. May you Rest In Peace, my friend. Until we meet again.

See where 'Thor: Love and Thunder' fits into our great sendup of the MCU's 29(!) films.
