The Delaware County Justinian Society and Societa daVinci cordially invite you to join in a Celebration of Italian American Heritage and Culture.
The Society will hold a Scholarship Banquet at the Phoenix Ballroom on Monday, November 25, 2024 from 6:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. During dinner, there will be a cultural presentation on Italian American Heritage in Delaware County and the Italian Cultural Center in the Lazzaretto in Essington. The Italian Cultural Center of the Delaware Valley located in the Lazzaretto Building, 97 Wanamaker Avenue in Tinicum, PA, is now open to the public on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month from 2-4pm and on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month from 10am to 2pm. LAM Valley Forge Lodge 1776 will hold its annual Christmas Party on Wednesday, December 11, 2024 at Presidential Caterers, 2910 Dekalb Pike in East Norriton, PA. ARA Delco Holiday Party at Marino’s Catering.
ARA Delco will hold its annual Christmas Party a on Sunday, December 15 starting at 3pm. The event will take place at Marino’s Caterers located at 1661 Mill Road in Chichester , PA. The event includes buffet dinner, antipasto, dessert, wine soda and espresso. Music will be provided by Moreno Fruzetti and as always Santa and Mrs. Santa will be there for the kids. Holiday Toy Drive 2024.
Once again, our parent organization ARA Delco, sponsor of Italian radio programs on WILM Mattinata Musicale and WVLT and WWDB’s Viaggio Musicale programs, are working with the Delaware State Grand Lodge of the Sons of Italy for this year’s annual toy drive. Thanks to generous donations in 2023 we received over one hundred toys to donate to three local organizations as well as additional toys purchased with cash donations.
Donation boxes will be set up at Serpe's Bakery at 1411 Kirkwood Highway, Elsmere, DE 19805, Mark's Barbershop at 1119 Kirkwood Hwy, Wilmington, DE 19805, at Carman Lincoln Ford at 193 S. Dupont Highway, New Castle, DE 19720 and at Carman Chrysler Jeep Dodge at 196 S Dupont Hwy., New Castle, DE 19720. Comedian Joe Conklin Performs at Neumann-Goretti High School
On Saturday November 23 starting at 7pm, comedian Joe Conklin joins forces with the world-renowned City Rhythm Orchestra for a night of comedy and music. Conklin will take you on a nostalgic journey featuring all his celebrity voice impressions, and a performance by an 8-piece orchestra and a cast of singers. LA VITA E` BELLA - LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL is a 1997 film directed by Roberto Benigni. The movie won the Cannes Film Festival Grand Prix of the Jury and 3 Academy Awards in 1999: Best Foreign Language Film, Best Actor, and Best Soundtrack. Life is Beautiful is a masterpiece of Italian cinema. This film placed Roberto Benigni's "moral" comedy in the history of global cinema.
Plot: Italy, 1939. The Second World War has not yet begun, but the country is already under a fascist dictatorship. Guido Orefice (Roberto Benigni) is a young man of Jewish origin who is moving to the city of Arezzo with a friend. During the journey, a young woman (Nicoletta Braschi ) literally falls into his arms. Attention listeners to the WWDB edition of Viaggio Musicale. This Sunday, April 14, 2024, Viaggio Musicale, regularly heard from 2-3 pm, will air from 2:00-2:30 pm and then the entire full hour will air later that afternoon from 5-6. This is for this week only. The other regularly scheduled ARA Delco Italian-American radio programs at 8 am on WILM and 6 pm WVLT are not affected.

Delaware Italian American Education Association and Friends of Italian Culture Hosts Next Viewing of Italian Film Festival on March 24 2024.

DIAEA Italian Cinema Series, in collaboration with Friends of Italian Culture, presents the third film of this year's Festival on March 24, 2024. The screening continues this year's theme: children actors as protagonists of unforgettable life stories.
CINEMA PARADISO is a 1988 film directed by Giuseppe Tornatore. The movie won the Cannes Film Festival Grand Prix of the Jury and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1989. The story, set in a Sicilian town in the immediate post-war years, proclaims the director's love for cinema and what it represented for the Italian people. The CINEMA PARADISO Director was Giuseppe Tornatore and the main cast were Philippe Noiret, Jacques Perrin, Pupella Maggio, and Salvatore Cascio. The film was released in 1988 in Italy and had a run time of 188 minutes.
Plot: After the Second World War's end, cinema is the only entertainment in a small Sicilian town. Eight-year-old Salvatore, nicknamed Toto`, is the mischievous, intelligent son of a war widow. Toto' discovers a love for films and spends every free moment at the local movie theater. There, he becomes friends with Alfredo, the projectionist, who introduces him to the mysteries of the projection machine and teaches him the skills that will become a foundation for Toto's interest in the art of cinema.

February 25 is next movie in Italian Film series.
Our next film showing is on February 25 with the movie Ladri di Biciclette- The Bicycle Thieves which premiered in 1948 . It was directed by Vittorio De Sica and won an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1949. Principal actors were Lamberto Maggiorani, Enzo Staiola, Lianella Carell and Elena Altieri.
Tickets for the event are $15.00, the exact cost as before the Covid 19 Pandemic. The tickets include the screening, a meal reflecting the movie's setting prepared by Chef Joann dell'Aversano, and a free ticket for the raffle.
Any money left after costs are covered goes to support the Italian Summer Camp La Piazza di Giustina, held each July for children ages 4-14.
This film will be screened on Sunday, February 25 and will take place in the Ballad Room (the cafeteria) at Saint Anthony of Padua Grade School, located at 1715W. 9th Street Wilmington, DE.
Doors will open at 1:45 p.m., with the meal served at 2:15 p.m and movie begins at 3 p.m.

Delaware Italian American Education Association Hosts First Viewing of Italian Film Festival for 2024.

The DIAEA Italian Cinema Series, in collaboration with Friends of Italian Culture, presents its first film of the year on January 28, 2024. The screening falls within this year's theme: child actors are protagonists of unforgettable life stories. I Bambini Ci Guardano is a 1943 film directed by Vittorio De Sica, based on the novel Pricò by Cesare Giulio Viola. Filmed between 1942 and 1943, it encountered distribution difficulties caused by the ongoing war.
The film showing will take place at The Ballad Room of St. Anthony of Padua Grade School located at W. 10th & N. Scott Streets in Wilmington, DE 19805. Doors open at 1:45 PM and dinner is served promptly at 2:15 PM. There will be a raffle drawing at 3 pm followed by a short movie introduction before the screening. Tickets are available on site for $15, cash or check purchase only. Funds raised at the cinema festival benefit La Piazza di Giustina Italian Language Summer Camp.
