Cody's March 2023 album "inner demons" says the quiet part out loud. And with good reason.
Since starting their musical journey in 2018 Cody has been hiding the darkness in the subtleties, hidden behind uplifting EDM beats or downtempo soft rock riffs. Now, Cody lets it to the forefront, unashamedly representing the damaged "used parts" of society.
"I feel like there comes a time in every artist's career where they have sort of an identity crisis," Cody explains in an interview with CJG Entertainment Media. "It starts to feel like maybe you've been doing it all wrong and need to completely reinvent yourself."
And that they have. The album features a much more punk/hip-hop centric style akin to much of what's seen in the mainstream at the moment.
During the final stages of production, Cody said in a post to their Instagram story "The more I keep working on my next album the more I realise it's basically what every artist is doing right now. Combining hip-hop and pop-punk. Not that that's a bad thing, it's a f****** vibe. It's just that I'm coming to that realisation that I'm following the mainstream trend, not because I'm chasing streams, but because I'm actually enjoying what the mainstream is doing for the first time since like the 2000s."
With this new album, Cody seeks to shed the notion that they're a one trick pony. "I don't like to put myself in a box," they said. "As an artist I don't want to be confined to one genre. That was never my aim. My goal was never to just be EDM or just be anything, really. My only goal as an artist, and as a person for that matter, is to be me. Whatever that looks like in any given moment."
It's Cody's world and we're all just living in it. "inner demons" releases March 10th 2023.
