Tonight at 6:30 PM, join local filmmaker & University of Winnipeg film graduate Ervin Chartrand in a one-hour discussion about his filmmaking journey and new projects he is working on.
I'm Ervin Chartrand, a proud Metis/Ojibway residing in Selkirk, Manitoba. My journey began 28 years ago, sparked by a simple question that led me to explore my family's history. In doing so, I unearthed the painful truth that my mother was a survivor of the residential school system, casting me as a second-generation survivor. This revelation opened one of the darkest chapters in Canadian history for me. Born in Winnipegosis with deep roots in Pine Creek First Nations and Winnipeg, my early life was characterized by poverty, violence, and a path that led me into a life of crime. A pivotal moment came when I received a nine-year prison sentence for involvement in organized crime. However, while behind bars, I seized the opportunity to enhance my education. After my release in 2002, I was inspired to enroll in a broadcasting course. By 2011, I worked on various film sets and explored acting for a few years, eventually embarking on a self-taught filmmaking career. Fueled by newfound passion and purpose, I pursued my film career after graduating from the University of Winnipeg with a degree in Film Studies in 2017. My return to this journey was marked by the revelation of my mother's residential school survivorship during my incarceration. This revelation strengthened my resolve to preserve and share Indigenous stories, histories, and culture. My unwavering belief in the power of storytelling has driven me to dedicate myself to ensuring the continuation of these essential narratives.
