A place of worship for Buddhists and Hindus is referred to as a candi in Indonesian language. Typically, Candi refers to a stone-built, old building. While some continue to be used as houses of worship, some are only recognized as archaeological sites. As a result, Candi is interpreted as a temple in English.

The world's largest Buddhist shrine is called Candi Borobudur. Its base is 123 meters by 123 meters in size. This temple was erected in the Sailendra dynasty (about the ninth century). Stones made up the entirety of it. The vast majority of its stone walls are ornamented with relief sculptures. The Borobudur Temple was allegedly constructed in the centre of an old lake and in the shape of a mandala, according to archaeologists. From above, it appeared to be a stone lotus in the center of a pond.

The main temple is a stupa made of three tiers: a pyramidal base with five concentric square terraces, a cone's stem with three circular platforms, and a massive stupa at its peak. The hill that served as the main center of the construction was a natural center for the stupa. Fine low reliefs adorn the walls and balustrades, which have a total surface area of 2,520 m2. There are 72 openwork stupas surrounding the circular platforms, each housing a statue of the Buddha.

According to Buddhist cosmology, the universe is divided vertically into the base, body, and superstructure of the Borobudur Temple. The universe is thought to be divided into three superimposing spheres, known as kamadhatu, rupadhatu, and arupadhatu, each of which represents the realm of our wants, where we are constrained by them.

The tenth level of the Borobudur Temple is accessible to those who want to perform acts of worship, according to Wiwit. It differs from tourist trips, which are only permitted up to the ninth level.

Visits for worship must nevertheless comply with specific requirements in order to preserve the temple. Everyone who ascends to the temple edifice must wear upanat sandals to reduce friction on the temple stones, and the number of people is restricted to 150 every hour.
