Riche Wellens beats out Scholes and Seedorf for Oldham manager job
Paul Scholes and Clarence Seedorf have both been unsuccessful in their applications to become the next Oldham Athletic manager, with interim boss Richie Wellens appointed on a full-time basis.
John Sheridan left Oldham on September 25 by mutual consent after a poor start to the League One season which had seen them lose seven of their first nine games.
Wellens stepped in on an interim basis and inspired an instant improvement, guiding them to four wins and a draw across all competitions in the five matches he has taken charge of.
The club confirmed that former Manchester United star and Oldham supporter Scholes was among those interviewed for the position, with the 42-year-old linked with the job several times before due to his strong ties with them.
Four-time Champions League winner Seedorf was also spoken to about the position at Boundary Park, with Oldham's search attracting plenty of interest.
League One: Oldham Athletic have hired Richie Wellens as their new manager despite interviewing Paul Scholes and Clarence Seedorf for the role.

Eden Hazard scored his first goals of the season to rescue Chelsea as Antonio Conte's men were held to a dramatic 3-3 draw by Roma in the Champions League.

Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte hit back at Jose Mourinho, telling the Manchester United manager to "think about his own team".
Conte had highlighted the multiple injuries in his squad ahead of his side's 3-3 Champions League draw with Roma on Wednesday.
After United's 1-0 win at Benfica, Mourinho hit out at managers moaning about injuries.
"I never speak about injuries," he said. "Other managers, they cry, they cry, they cry when a player is injured."
Told of Mourinho's comments, Conte was unimpressed, telling the Portuguese tactician to stop worrying about his former club. "I think he has to think about his own team and start looking at himself, not others," the Italian said. "I think that a lot of the time Mourinho has to see what happened at Chelsea."

Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde joked that he hopes Lionel Messi will reach 200 European goals this season.
Messi scored his 100th goal in European competition on Wednesday, netting in Barca's 3-1 Champions League victory over Olympiacos.

Spartak Moscow 5 Sevilla 1: Clinical second-half show stuns woeful Spaniards.
A brilliantly clinical second-half display from hosts Spartak Moscow saw the Russian champions take full advantage of Sevilla's profligacy and secure an emphatic 5-1 win in Champions League Group E on Tuesday.
Sevilla appeared to have fully clicked into gear early in the second period, but goals from Lorenzo Melgarejo, Denis Glushakov, Luiz Adriano and Quincy Promes saw the Spaniards blown away by a Spartak side who looked irresistible on the break and moved level on five points with Liverpool.
Proceedings were thrilling and breathless for much of the first half, with Promes breaking the deadlock when finishing off a flowing Spartak move.
Sevilla levelled through centre-back Simon Kjaer after half an hour but Spartak capitalised through first-half substitute Melgarejo just before the hour mark.

Leicester City have sacked manager Craig Shakespeare following a run of one win in eight Premier League matches this season, reportedly.
