Just Released!
Long Beach Island Beach Badges 1967-2022

In the first ever book about New Jersey’s beach badges, LBI takes center stage. Starting with the very first badges issued, this colorful hardcover presents every seasonal badge ever issued — plus a comprehensive display of daily, weekly, senior, holiday, and specialty badges.

Presented within each of the Island’s six towns chronologically, along with history, fun facts, rules, and price history (it’s all here!), this is a gallery of summer icons familiar to generations of LBI beachgoers.

Everyone who has spent summers on LBI will connect with the rich memories these badges represent. They’ve marked the passage of time — a child’s birth year, family vacations, summer jobs, and even relationships that have lasted a lifetime. Readers can stroll down the endless summer’s memory lane and reminisce. Who knew there was so much meaning and emotion in these little plastic tags of various colors and shapes!

We're thrilled to publish this fascinating pictorial look at more than half a century of LBI badges by Ship Bottom resident — and uber-collector — Bob Kugel. Look for him at an LBI Museum talk and at signings later this summer!

This podcast (links below) is a great listen for perspective on Long Beach Island and the Shore’s experience with Superstorm Sandy by someone who actually wrote the book on the subject. Scott Mazzella, author of "Surviving Sandy: Long Beach Island and the Greatest Storm of the Jersey Shore" is the engaging guest and the NJ-based interviewer is well informed and asks smart questions. On the 10 year anniversary of Sandy, it’s worth being reminded of the resilience of those who went through it. Listen on Apple, Spotify, or YouTube at these links:

It’s National Lighthouse Day!

Down The Shore’s New Jersey Lighthouse Calendar for 2023 celebrates every day of the year with amazing photographs of our favorite sentinels from up and down the Shore.

But is it official? Sort of!

For the bicentennial of the U.S. Lighthouse Service in 1989, the U.S. Lighthouse Society petitioned Congress to declare a National Lighthouse Day on August 7 — the date in 1789 that the Ninth Act of the First Congress, establishing federal control of lighthouses, was passed and signed by President George Washington. The bill was championed in the House by South Jersey’s Congressman William J. Hughes, and the measure was signed by President Ronald Reagan. But the designation only established the day for 1989, and efforts to make the designation official annually have so far not been successful.

We still “unofficially” celebrate National Lighthouse Day along the Jersey Shore with our remarkable, historic lighthouses — from Sandy Hook to the Delaware Bay!

2023 New Jersey Lighthouse Calendar cover reveal! An amazing photo of Barnegat Lighthouse from a year ago during the partial solar eclipse by Matt Reitinger. It’s a great image of the Jersey Shore's most famous lighthouse — and to get the exposure and timing right with the challenging capture of an eclipse is remarkable. Matt’s photos have appeared in the Down The Shore and NJ Lighthouse Calendars over the years but this one from June 10, 2021 is truly unique. We’ll share more photos in the coming weeks. The 2023 calendars are now available at throughout the Shore.

Newly hung in the Main Gallery at the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences in Loveladies is a vintage photography exhibit that "reimagines a black and white Island in color."
