Hesquiaht harvester Josh Charleson tells the story of the collapse and rebound of herring in his traditional territory.

The herring spawn occurs once a year on the BC Coast when millions of fish flock together to reproduce, bringing thousands predators together to feed. Herring is considered a keystone species because of its importance as a food source to so many animals in British Columbia. It is also an important cultural species for Coastal First Nations who have eaten and preserved the fish since time immemorial.

The Stillaguamish is a river that faces many challenges. Urban development, agriculture, and forestry have degraded fish stocks to dangerously low levels. Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife and the Stillaguamish Tribe have been working to restore habitat and healthy populations of multiple Endangered Species Act-protected species like Chinook salmon.

Olam Films had the opportunity to tell the story of this massive ongoing effort in co-management with a 10-minute film, Paddling Together. We hope this film plays a small part in the restoration of this important river system that has sustained the Stillaguamish Tribe since time out of mind.

At Olam Films we have decided to become an explicitly bioregionally-based business. Working with Indigenous Peoples has taught us so much about the importance of being rooted in place and we have decided to make this a core aspect of how we do our work.

On a corporate shoot last year, we worked on set with a group of six producers who had flown out from Toronto for a 3-day shoot. This way of doing things is unsustainable and misalligned with our values.

We find the framework of Salmon Nation from Magic Canoe a compelling way to think about place, as a cross-colonial-border bioregion defined by the presence of wild salmon.

We are a business based in Salmon Nation.

This doesn't mean we will never work outside of these lands, but our intention is to not get caught up flying across the world for projects when there is so much important work to do at home.
