Amazing looking lunar halo in the night sky , reading about it I discovered that it is a type of optical illusion. It occurs when moonlight is refracted, or bent, through ice crystals in the Earth’s atmosphere. These ice crystals are typically found in high altitude cirrus clouds. The light passing through these crystals is bent in such a way that it creates a ring of light at a specific angle – usually 22 degrees – around the moon. This is why lunar halos often have a distinct size and shape. The halo is not actually on the moon; it’s the result of the light’s interaction with the ice crystals in our atmosphere, which makes it look like there’s a glowing circle around the moon.
