Sam Abernethy plays by the rules, but his sister Alex does not. When Sam, a by-the-book insurance investigator, begins channeling letters from dead people after his wild-at-heart sister's untimely death, Sam's eerie new ability may be the only thing that saves his loved ones from a deadly serial arsonist.

As Sam and his deaf niece Hannah struggle to recover from Alex’s sudden death, they experience communication from Alex in different ways. Sam inexplicably begins transcribing messages from the dead, while Hannah paints one image over and over that she’s convinced is sent by her mother.

As these strange events unfold, Sam and his investigative partner, Jack, get drawn deeply into the web of a dangerous serial arsonist. Desperate for answers, Sam turns to his estranged girlfriend Sara—a forensic handwriting analyst—and a quirky young science prodigy for help. When the arsonist turns their attention to Sara and Hannah, Sam’s connection to his sister comes together in an unmistakable sign that may be his only hope.

The broken-down woodshed stands precariously at the riverbank, slumping as if tired from holding up the weight of the kudzu and vines that envelop it. The thing’s feeble wooden bones could be knocked down by a strong wind. The shed’s one small window glows eerily with the light of a candle.

Mister approaches the shed, hoping the girl is still there. It will make it so much more satisfying if she can see—with her own eyes—the destruction of her little world. He has no idea why Mama has tried to teach her anything. She’s a dunce. And a cripple. Of course, he has no real room to judge—seeing as he’s a one-armed, tough-skinned river rat.

They’ll all see, though, one day soon. He’s saving his earnings up for a golden arm. Well perhaps not golden, but metal. And indestructible. Mama’s Voodoo dolls, hex potions, and JuJu Jewelry are small potatoes. Paying the bills, barely scraping by – it’s not for him. Soon, when he takes the trinkets Mama wants him to sell at the market—he’ll be buying that arm and a new suit. Once he does this, everyone who ever told him he was worthless will regret it. Starting with her.
