The decision will allow APR to graze bison on 63,000 acres of BLM-administered land in Phillips County.

Aug. 5, 1805: On Aug. 4 Merriweather Lewis left Clark a note on a green willow at the mouth of the Wisdom (Big Hole) River instructing him not to follow but a beaver took the note and Clack followed Lewis. Clark wrote the the high temperature that day was 49 degress and that "we wer oblige to cut our way thro' the willows - Men much fatigued from the excessive labours in hauling the Canoes over rapids &c. very weak being in the water all day." Just imagine trying to move these canoes up the river.

In 2021, Montana had the highest net inflow of moves per capita, with 73% of moves inbound. Billings was the #1 destination with a 3.9 to 1 inbound to outbound ratio.

2020 was a game-changer for migration, completely upending established trends. Now that the U.S. is starting to settle into some semblance of normal life in a pandemic, what trends emerge from 2021 domestic moving data?

MPL IS THE BEST LIBRARY IN THE WORLD - FOR REAL!!!! The International Federation of Library Associations World Congress in Dublin, Ireland announced that Missoula Public Library is the Public Library of 2022. This award is presented to a newly designed library in any country which has excelled at combining open and sustainable architecture with IT solutions, learning technologies, and local culture and landscape. Missoula Public Library’s downtown flagship, created by Minneapolis-based MSR Design and Montana’s A&E Design, and opened in July 2021, is the first library in North America to win this prestigious award—besting libraries in Denmark, Latvia, and Saudi Arabia. July 12, 1968 Pirsig was in Montana, journaling his trip to the West Coast with his son on their Honda Dream 305 motorcycle. The journal later became Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.

DAY 5: JULY 12, 1968. Rock Creek Vista Point on the Beartooth Highway, MT.
"At a turnout on the road we stop, take some record photographs to show we have been here and then walk to a little path that takes out out to the edge of the cliff. A motorcycle on the road almost straight down beneath us could hardly be seen from up here. We bundle up more against the cold and continue upward.
The broad-leafed trees are all gone. Only small pines are left. Many of them have twisted and stunted shapes.

Soon stunted pines disappear entirely and we're in alpine meadows. There's not a tree anywhere, only grass everywhere filled with little pink and blue and white dots of intense color. Wildflowers, everywhere! These and grasses and mosses and lichens are all that can live here, now. We've reached the high country, above the timberline.

I look over my shoulder for one last view of the gorge. Like looking down at the bottom of the ocean. People spend their entire lives at those lower altitudes without any awareness that this high country exists."

Mattie Castner escaped slavery to forge a new life in Montana. Through grit and determination, she made her way from North Carolina to Fort Benton, where she married Belt coal merchant John Castner. Mattie operated Belt’s first hotel on the Great Falls-Lewistown stage line and later owned a ranch in the Highwoods. When she died in 1920 Mattie was Belt’s largest single landowner. Due to her generosity and entrepreneurial spirit, Mattie is fondly remembered as the “Mother of Belt.”

First Peoples Mountain is the new name for a peak in Yellowstone formerly named after a white man who helped lead an attack that left more than 170 Native Americans dead.

The country's first national park has opted to change the name after research uncovered the involvement of Gustavus Doane in an attack that killed 173 Native Americans.
