Afya International Afya International works to provide affordable menstrual cups to young African women to eliminate gender based disadvantages and keep girls in school!

The Problem
African women lack access to feminine hygiene products. This causes young women to miss out on school and work during their period, which has negative consequences on individuals, and the society as a whole. What They Use Now
They currently substitute dangerous materials such as garbage, newspaper, cow dung, plants, and mattress stuffing because of the high cost and inaccessibility of

well-known feminine hygiene products. THE SOLUTION
Afya International introduces their menstrual cup: a device made out of medical grade silicone that is reusable, cost efficient, comfortable, and easy to use. It is a one time purchase that lasts for up to 15 years and is shown to be preferred over pads and tampons. The business operates by selling full retail menstrual cups to the upper and middle class in South Africa at full retail to fund the biannual educational program that teaches both men and women the importance of menstruation, that it is an indication of fertility and good health, along with general anatomy and proper use of the product. Afya International believes that if women don't miss days of school or work because of their menstruation it will result in fewer child marriages, decreased fertility and maternal mortality rates, and will empower women to take a hold of their own health, financial status, and education! CONCLUDING THOUGHTS
This is an issue that is relevant--not only to women--but also to men, families, and entire societies; it demands immediate attention of development organizations, policymakers, and social businesses, which all have a role to play in solving this critical issue.

Our contact in Mozambique for had a meeting with the Minister of Health today. Once we send the certificates that our menstrual cups are safe for internal use, we can get a meeting with the Executive Director of UN Women. This would be BIG! We are doing our study in conjunction with the Ministry of Health, UNISEF, the UN, at Graça Machel's school (First Lady in Mozambique and South Africa and Nelson Mandela's widow.) I can't believe that this started out in a classroom as a "weird idea" and now we are seeing it come to scale and be real!

Afya International has been granted a wonderful opportunity to start a pilot program with the Ministry of Health in Mozambique and Graca Machel (Nelson Mandela's widow!!) the first week of August where the product will be evaluated in both urban and rural settings in Mozambique. One thousand cups will be distributed through two different secondary schools, and for the purpose of the study the girls will receive one for free. Data will be collected via trusted local women being paid a stipend, and will be compiled and presented to the Minister of Health and others in November. Afya needs financial support in order to purchase 1000 menstrual cups for the study and to help pay for the stipends for those collecting data. A similar pilot program is aimed to be replicated in Uganda in November, and financial support is greatly needed! This study will help Afya refine and solidify their product to be the best possible by evaluating usability and quality, begin to set up frameworks for an educational program, and begin to spread the message that menstruation matters and should be addressed. If you can please spread the word and donate what you can! Anything helps us become one step closer to achieving our mission and providing young women with what they deserve!! https://www.gofundme.com/afyainternational
