Remembering our veterans — here are a few favorites who happened to be brilliant storytellers.
Kirby was on the battlefield in Europe. Wood served in the Merchant Marines and then as a US Army airborne paratrooper — both in the Pacific. The youngest, Ditko worked on an Army newspaper in Allied-occupied Germany.

More: Wood started with a tour with Merchant Marines, 1944 & '45. They ran supplies but also picked up and transported battle survivors of both sides (often taking them to hospital or confinement). After his duty with the Merchant Marines, Wood enlisted in the US Army, 11th Airborne, where he became a paratrooper.
Following USA dropping A-bombs on Japan, there was still much for USA forces to do in the area. On August 28, the occupation of Japan, led by the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers began. The surrender ceremony was held on 2 September, aboard the United States Navy battleship USS Missouri. Allied civilians and military personnel alike celebrated V-J Day, the end of the war in the Pacific. However, isolated soldiers and personnel from Japan's far-flung forces throughout Asia and the Pacific refused to surrender for months and years afterwards.

re Kirby: When his commanders learned Kirby could draw, he was made a scout who’d advance into European towns and draw reconnaissance maps and pictures. It was extremely dangerous duty.
