Episode 204: The Lost Colony of Roanoke Feat. Graveyard Tales *IS LIVE*!
Image 01: The Lost Colony of Roanoke is one of the most famous and highly debated unsolved mysteries.
Image 02: When the original Roanoke settlers were dropped off, they had not anticipated staying through the winter without additional provisions. Their temporary fort did not protect the settlers from the elements and they had no means of agriculture. Any possible resupply ship was stuck in England due to conflict with the Spanish.
Image 03-06: The Roanoke settlers depended on the neighboring Algonquin tribe to provide food. The Algonquin had a thriving village and employed seasonal hunting/fishing/farming tactics to keep the community fed year round; However, as the Algonquin began to fall sick, tensions rose between the settlers and their neighbors. Images drawn by John White.
Image 07: The settlers ransacked a nearby village and placed a chief’s head on a stick as a warning. In retaliation, a settler named George Howe was struck by 16 arrows and beaten with a club.
Image 08: When John White finally returned to Roanoke, three years had passed. The settlement was completely destroyed and the only clue as to the whereabouts of the settlers was a tree carving suggesting a local island called Croatoan.
Image 09: Throughout the 1930s, several stones dubbed “The Dare Stones” were discovered. These stones, allegedly signed by one of the Roanoke settlers, detailed the
whereabouts of the new Roanoke settlement and spoke of attacks by local tribes.
Image 10: In May of 2012, new evidence on
Walter Raleigh’s “Virginea Pars” map suggests a hidden fort which could be where the Roanoke settlement moved. The hidden fort is written in invisible ink and can only be viewed with special lighting. What do you guys think? Did the settlers get turned into trees?
