Sophie and Sebastian (2025)

Let me tell you a little about myself. The stories you’ve been listening to are based loosely on the adventures of my own five children. They are also inspired by some of my favourite children’s books, including Winnie the Pooh and the Dutch classic Jip and Janneke. In my day job I actually teach children’s literature at a university. Well, I teach plenty of other things too, but they’re not nearl

y as important as children’s literature. That’s because children’s stories and poems are for everyone. I have met only a few people who didn’t like Dr. Seuss or Charlotte’s Web, and they just didn’t realize what they were missing. I was born in a little town in the Netherlands, and grew up speaking Dutch. When I was twelve, my family moved to Canada, where I’ve lived ever since. It took a bit to learn a new language, but with hard work (and a lot of reading), I not only learned English, but discovered what a beautiful language it is. I’m now so passionate about language learning that I’ve created a special website for my writing students. Check it out if you’d like to become a better writer yourself. That’s enough about me. Recorded another episode for my children's story podcast. I've also spent a bit of time the last couple of weeks updating the podcast by moving it to dedicated hosting and deleting the old website, editing a bunch of older episodes, and much more. It's interesting looking back at all this creative writing over the years. It started out as a way to capture some of the odd linguistic expressions of our younger kids. It's also been an attempt to write a kind of kids' version of The Vinyl Cafe or The News from Lake Wobegone. And stylistically, I've been greatly influenced by children's writers like A. A. Milne, E.B. White, and Annie M. G. Schmidt. Looking back, I still enjoy pretty much all the episodes and there's only one or two that I would consider rewriting (I shouldn't reveal which ones). Now that the actual Sophie and Sebastian are much older, I'll keep the names but write more about our youngest two kids. Anyway, I hope people enjoy these stories as much as I enjoyed writing them. And a shout out to Will van Delft, who has done so many fantastic illustrations over the years.

The Sophie and Sebastian podcast has been dormant for a while, but I'm working on updating it and adding some new episodes. One major change is that I'm doing away with having a separate website. Instead, I'm opting for a professional hosting solution (Buzzsprout), which will be easier to keep up to date and will give the podcast a much wider reach.
