Evil Eye Pictures Evil Eye Pictures is a Northern California based design studio specializing in animation and visual effects for VR, feature films and commercials.

Evil Eye Pictures was started in 2004 by John Jack, Matt McDonald and Dan Rosen. Having worked together on The Matrix sequels at ESC Entertainment the three decided it was time to open their own shop. The core of the company and the work is the people. From the beginning the goal has been to grow a highly creative space, technically efficient pipeline and offer stability to the entire team. Having

control over these critical components brings precision to an otherwise subjective and organic process. We are always striking a balance between art and science, creating the pictures that our clients envision. The term "evil eye" comes from the early days of Matt and Dan working together in compositing. Matt would ask Dan, "Hey, can you give this the hairy eyeball?". The two thought it best not to call the company Hairy Eyeball. At the simplest level we make pictures and so Evil Eye Pictures was born.

Tracer Fire. Impact hits. Bug Swarms, and Goo Sims.

Our FX and Animation teams had a blast contributing to this cinematic, assisting Epic with an action packed scene. The sequence was bursting with dynamic creature animation. A highlight for the FX was the creature blood simulation that sprays across the frame while Fishstick fires away.

The game begins... Squid Game comes to Fortnite!

We put our spin on the launch trailer's opening cinematic. Working with the Squid Game Fortnite assets in UE, we balanced both worlds into one exciting spot for fans. Character animation is always a highlight for us, as was creating the custom environment and stylized lighting.

Featuring Iconic cartoon dads, this short gave our animators the opportunity to bring Bob from Bob’s Burgers and Cleveland Brown into the Fortnite action. We balanced the character’s tone and humor with the iconic movement and dances of Fortnite. Our team used stylized animation based on game cycles and control rig to bring the cel drawn characters to live in 3D.

This event had us operating on all cylinders. Our FX team jumped into Death Star Sabotage event, plugging in console destructions, explosions and fire in classic Star Wars locations.

With the event beginning in X-wing starfighters, we got to uprez and nail the look of the Fortnite Island from space. The bespoke set dressing and uprez fx of our island had to look good from all player angles. Freshly loaded up with weapons, our console destruction brought players into the action while running through the Death Star hallways.

Our team had a blast with this end of season reveal of Superman hovering above the Fortnite Island.

The one-shot cliffhanger had to leave fans excited, combining a custom Fortnite Island look from deep space with the dynamics of Superman’s iconic cape.

Our lighting and fx team loved dialing all the elements of the island into one epic frame.

We’re excited to share our latest cinematic short for Fortnite’s Daigo's Fate in-game event! This project was a love letter to classic Fortnite charm, starring fan-favorite characters Dill and Brat.

The team relished getting to work with the moody lighting, expressive animation that brought the characters to life, and the detailed asset work on all the props throughout the short. A key creative highlight was developing the look of the void space, with the volumetric and inky FX - and our layout team did a great job making the spaces blend seamlessly.

It was refreshing to do some old-school storytelling, making the in-game event as cinematic as possible.

This year, we had the opportunity to help bring Star Wars to Fortnite in an epic trailer packed with iconic moments! 🎬

Our team crafted the stunning establishing shots, panning from the classic starfield down to the Island, blending Fortnite’s vibrant style with cinematic Star Wars mood. From lighting to animation and camera layout, the details set the tone for this crossover.

We also loved enhancing Imperial Vehicle assets with high-detail refinements and bringing dynamic interactive lighting to life—whether for weapon fire or immersive Star Wars environments. Plus, we custom-built Emperor Palpatine’s hologram, showcasing the Death Star targeting the Fortnite Island! 🌍

A galactic collaboration we’ll never forget!
