End of an era!

After 4 years and more than 110 podcast episodes, my run as the producer and host of “Life in Celina” - the official community podcast of - has come to an end. It was tough to receive the news this week, since Celina was my first community podcast. Budget constraints brought my historic run in Celina to an end.

What a ride, though!

I’m so proud of what we did with this community podcast. We painted an amazing picture of what’s it like to live and work in Celina. We accomplished that goal by simply celebrating story. The guests … oh, the wonderfully great guests. Every single person I got the opportunity to sit down with was special in their own right. Probably the Mt. Rushmore of “Life in Celina” guests: and … … … Coach Bill Elliott, head coach of Celina Football. (That’s not taking ANYTHING away from other guests, like … … … .

I’m grateful to City of Celina and for giving me a chance to lead this charge. I’m beyond thankful to for hiring me back in 2020.

Nailed it!

I showed my daughter a Reel on IG. It was making a yummy-looking cookie bowl. She was inspired to try it. When it came out of the oven, it appeared to be a colossal fail, but she was able to salvage the sweet treat.

Speak Up!

I have so many cool speaking opportunities coming up in the next few weeks. I’m grateful for every single one of them. I LOVE getting the opportunity to pour into people and create ripple effects across their lives!

Highlights:

I’m super excited about working with during their back-to-school in-service. I’ll be delivering a keynote to all faculty and staff - AND facilitating a DISC workshop for the school’s business office.

I’ll also start working with several other community leadership classes - Granbury and Wylie - in the next few weeks.

Finally … I recently submitted Call for Speaker proposals/inquiries with and (). My Value Statement: Participants will return to the workplace equipped with valuable knowledge and practical tools that significantly enhance their overall well-being and productivity. The techniques and strategies learned will empower them to manage stress more effectively, maintain a positive mindset, and foster healthier work-life balance.

Our Leadership GR class had a wonderfully great session this month. We focused on first responders in Glen Rose and Somervell County. Thanks to Sheriff Alan West and Fire Chief Brian Jones for an engaging and informative day.

Speak up!!!

It has been one hell of a two-week run in my speaking journey. I’ve had some incredible opportunities to share my message of self-care and mental resilience. I love it!!!

One of my favorite opportunities over the last two weeks was back-to-back speaking opportunities with . On Feb. 14, I facilitated a fireside chat with the resilient . (What a rock star!!) We got the chance to visit in front of 600 people after Drew’s keynote. It was a powerful discussion about mental health and the importance of being transparent with people you love and trust. The next day of the Adolescent Symposium, I delivered my keynote, “Make the Important Things Important - Starting with YOU.” During this 2-day event, I got the honor to meet Miss Lewisville, . (Also a rock star!)

Other speaking gigs over the last couple of weeks, keynote at Valentine’s Brunch, benefiting … I spoke on the importance of effective storytelling to the Glen Rose Chamber … I emceed a benefit for … and I poured into the women of the Young Men’s Service League in Aledo.

I start an epic speaking run today, incorporating ALL the different hats that I wear. When I started working at Tarleton Radio - this was my vision. (Blog post in comments below explains everything in detail.)

This week, I’m sharing the story of Tarleton Radio, while sprinkling in some personal development. (I’m speaking to three civic organizations in Stephenville over a three-day stretch.)

Other upcoming gigs include keynotes ( Mental Health America of Greater Dallas and Wings of Hope Equitherapy) … serving as an emcee for a local non-profit (Training Ground Studios) … and helping launch a new program, Business Boost, spearheaded by Lorie Vincent and Acceleration by design.

I’m attacking each of these upcoming speaking gigs with a grateful heart. I’m thankful for each opportunity, and excited to share my message and celebrate the amazing power of story.

Maximum impact!

I finished up two mastermind classes this week - one through and one with providers at . I met with each group for more than 6 months, going through the lessons in “The Tacos and Chocolate Diet.”

I LOVED getting the feedback from both groups during our last class. We discussed their biggest takeaways from the book and the mastermind sessions. The response was incredible. It was like gas on my fire. Every single person had a profound takeaway.

I’m so grateful to both groups for embracing me, my book and my message - which revolves around self-care and mental resilience.

Exciting News: The Burleson Chamber has decided to bring me back to lead a mastermind for its Leadership Burleson Class of 2024. We’ll kick things off in February. The idea is to pour into these community advocates so they will turn around and pour into other people and be a light for the world around them.

I’m excited to finish out this year strong, and even more thrilled to start 2024 with a lot of momentum.

I’m also over-the-top delighted about the variety of these upcoming speaking gigs. They’re not just traditional keynotes. They include mastermind groups and professional development workshops. I also get the honor to emcee an event. I’m just grateful any time I get the opportunity to have a microphone in my hand and pour into others.

Never stop giving back!

I worked on something super cool for Giving Tuesday at Tarleton Public Radio. I wanted to share...

When I started working at back in October, I wanted to do something outside-the-box (and impactful) for this annual day of giving. Even though we need financial support at 90.5 KTRL, I wanted the station to take a back seat to ten area non-profits on that particular day. I wanted to showcase these organizations throughout the day. So, that’s what we did!

At the top of every hour on Nov. 28, I went LIVE ON AIR with representatives and advocates from these non-profits. Our goal: Raise awareness and create ripple effects for these organizations.

I honestly believe we accomplished that goal! It was a wonderfully great and impactful day.

The students at .7 invited me to be a special guest on their weekly video series/podcast. It was so wonderfully great to be back in studio with a hot mic. Today’s topic: Life Lists. I shared my story and how my first Life List changed my life. Then, I coached them up on how to make their own Life List. The best part … then they shared some of their goals, dreams and aspirations. It was a really cool episode.

One of my key points: “Without a doubt … a Life List item for each of you should be to graduate from .”

We also discussed the importance of writing your list down … vision AND action … and the power of relational joy.

Two awesome!!!

For the first time in my speaking career, I delivered back-to-back keynotes in the same day.

I started the day in Granbury, Texas. I had the privilege to speak at the Valiant Residential Regional Summit. My keynote, which kicked off the two-day event: Make the Important Things Important - Starting with YOU. (It was a fun and engaged group. Every person got a copy of Tacos and Chocolate.)

Then … I did a small wardrobe change in the parking lot of Hilton Garden Inn and raced to Burleson, Texas to speak at the Burleson Area Chamber of Commerce Fall Luncheon.

On the stage at Pathway Church, I delivered my mindset keynote: Going Full Throttle … in Neutral. I shared coaching stories and techniques to operate with a neutral mindset - not too high … not too low.

It was an incredible day! As I reflected on the two speaking gigs, my heart was full of gratefulness. I got the opportunity to do what I love, pour into people and potentially impact people’s lives. And I got to do it back-to-back. Let’s go!!!

On the Air!

I went live on the radio for the first time in a long time this week. I had the honor and privilege to have a sit-down conversation with Dr. James Hurley, president of Tarleton State University on KTRL Public Radio. We broke into our normal NPR programming to talk about the start of the school year, all the university’s exciting construction projects and homecoming.

My big takeaways:

1. Dr. Hurley is a rock star, and he already has this Midwestern State University grad bleeding purple…

2. There are SO many incredible things happening at Tarleton State…

3. I miss being live on the air! There is nothing like it. Podcasting is fun, but being LIVE is like drinking from a fire hose of adrenaline. I definitely want some more of THAT!

The Big Event!

Game Days!

My favorite title is “Dad” but a close second is “Coach.” And right now, in this season of life, that title shows up in many different ways - from coaching my daughter’s softball team to working one-on-one with all of my coaching clients. Regardless of how or when I’m coaching, I simply LOVE pouring into my people and helping them to get to where they want to go.

Last week, I got a cool opportunity to watch two of my clients do what they love on their respective Game Days. I watched my high school golfer compete in his first tournament of the fall, and I got a chance to watch one of my rodeo clients compete in breakaway roping. (Both are “sports of failure” that take incredible mental resilience to stay neutral - not too high or not too low.) I wish I could report that Andrew set the course record and finished atop the leaderboard in his golf tournament, and Brandy walked away with a fat check. But they both had off days. What I LOVE about both these athletes, they don’t let failure spin them out. They have bought into neutral thinking and understand that perfection is cliche and bu****it. They learn from their mistakes and are excited for the next opportunity to shine. LOVE IT!!!

Two much?!?!

For some reason taking a pic on the second day of school has become a thing for us. It’s obviously a bit, poking fun at all of the Day 1 photos. I just remember when my son, who is now in the eighth grade, was in kindergarten. He was devastated when we told him he had to go again tomorrow … and the next day … and the next day. There was no more Pre-K on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. (I think our Day 2 photo that year - with all its disappointment - was real.)

I’m very grateful that my children love school. They’re genuinely curious, they like to learn new things and they love seeing their friends.

It’s going to be a wonderfully great school year!!!!

Who’s your caddie?!?!

I got the chance to caddie for one of my coaching clients again this week (shoutout to Andrew, a high school golfer at Glen Rose High School). I love getting these opportunities to watch our mental game plan in action. (Even when it’s 109 degrees outside.)

Andrew, who will be a junior this fall, had one of his best rounds of golf during the second round of the Cleburne Junior Golf Championships at Cleburne Golf Links. Despite the brutal heat, he stayed neutral and played with a lot of confidence.

Fun Fact: I was told during his round - after he posted his third birdie in a row - that last year in this same tournament, he shot a 110 … wanted to quit (he was quickly told that was not an option) … and finished dead last. What a difference a year - and a lot of hard work - makes. He improved by more than thirty strokes!!!!

I’m so proud of this young man! He works his ass off - on and off the golf course. He has high expectations for himself and he’s constantly setting goals and busting his tail to accomplish those goals. He has one more summer tournament before teeing it up for the Tigers this fall. I’m excited to watch him keep shining.

Personal Note: I’m SO sore from carrying Andrew’s bag for 18 holes in that heat. He is definitely tougher than me!!!

Let’s Ride!!!

Our 94-year-old family friend, Johnetta, wanted to go on a motorcycle ride this morning. She rode on her first motorcycle when she was 15, but she hadn’t been on the back of a bike in almost 2 years. She craved the wind blowing through her hair again.

After breakfast this morning, she expressed interest in going, and another family friend made it happen (big-time shout out to Brent). My favorite part of this spontaneous adventure, Johnetta was all in- despite her age, neck brace and sundress!

After pulling out of the parking lot of Debbie’s Restaurant, they drove around the historic Glen Rose, Texas Square. Then, Brent dropped dropped her off safely at Glen Rose Nursing & Rehab Center. We had her walker waiting for her when she pulled up with a smile on her face and her hair in wonderfully great disarray.

As I looked at the photos that I took, and shared them with family and friends, I realized there were a lot of reminders spinning around this beautiful moment:

• Make it your daily goal to make someone’s day (Brent crushed that goal today);

• Kindness goes a long way;

• Life is short … life is precious - we need to act accordingly;

• You’re never too old to go on an adventure;

• There is something so powerful about giving your excuses the middle finger;

• Intentional living is great, as long as you sprinkle in a little spontaneity.

Inspiration to a tee!

I had a really cool opportunity to design a T-shirt for one of my coaching clients (shoutout to Matt). For several months we talked about new merch for his badass gym. He threw out some ideas. His t-shirt company mocked up a few things up. Finally, I asked if I could put on my design hat and give it the ol’ college try. Matt was gracious and agreed.

My inspiration: I took months of conversations from our coaching sessions … I obviously honored Matt’s desire to stress resiliency … and I wanted to apply blue-collar, get-to-work imagery. I decided to use a simple piece of tape - the makeshift “name tags” from Habitat for Humanity and freshmen football.

I LOVE how these shirts turned out! They are so simple - but so powerful and cool. I’m grateful to Matt for trusting my design skills and embracing my vision.

Home is where the heart is!

A few times a year, I like to do a civic keynote for a community-centric organization in the Greater DFW area. This week, I got the chance to speak in my quaint community of Glen Rose, Texas. It was a wonderfully great opportunity with our local Chamber of Commerce.

The REALLY cool part of this speaking gig … my daughter, Ily Belle, got to hear me speak in person for the first time. She graded my presentation on a curve, giving me a generous A+. (I graded myself out with a solid B.) I told her beforehand: “Just please don’t fall asleep. My ego couldn’t handle that.”

A huge thanks to Glen Rose Chamber for embracing my message and asking me to speak. Also, thanks to for hosting the event.

NOTE: If you’re a civic organization with a very limited budget, and you’re looking for a speaker, I would love to visit with you. Again, I don’t do a lot of these in-kind keynotes anymore, but I am intentional about about doing a couple/few a year.

Fore!

I never in a million years thought that I would get the chance to be a caddie - mainly because I suck at golf! BUT I got an incredible opportunity to carry the bag for one of my coaching clients at a 3-day tournament in Wichita Falls this week. I loved every second of it!

I got the chance to see, firsthand, all of the hard work that Andrew has put in on the mental side of his game. I was also able to coach him up when things went a little south. (He stayed pretty neutral throughout the tournament, though.)

I love working with young athletes - whether we’re setting goals, discussing approach or fine-tuning their ability to stay neutral. The really cool part .. my approach to coaching these athletes definitely carries over to my “real world” clients as well.

Lastly … it was fun to be back in Wichita Falls after all these years. I went to school and worked at Midwestern State. Again, I never dreamed that I would be back there in this capacity. (Ironic and shame-filled story … we used to get drunk and steal the flags off the golf course at the country club.)

Cowboy Up!

For the last 155 days, I kept asking myself: “How do I want to jump back into social media?” I never had a bonafide answer … until …

I recently got an amazing opportunity to speak to the multi-media department of the Dallas Cowboys. I was a keynote speaker at their annual retreat. I wasn’t talking to players - like Dak … CeeDee and/or Micah - but it was still a super cool opportunity to pour into a team of people who work for America’s Team.

My message - make the important thing important, starting with YOU - continues to resonate with audiences. This keynote revolves around self-care and mental resilience. It’s about making yourself a priority so you can pour into others and be a light for the world around you!

I’m so grateful to my buddy, Nick Eatman, for helping make this speaking gig happen. Again, it was a tremendous opportunity.

About my social-media hiatus … it was only supposed to be for 90 days. I needed it for my mental health. It turned into 155 days. It was glorious. Much needed. I feel reset and optimistic that I can start using social media (instead of letting it use me). Thanks to everyone who reached out and checked on me. I’m alive and well and excited about what’s next.

Dino-mite!

This is Bootsie. She is a special dinosaur that now lives outside our property in Rainbow, TX. She’s special for a lot of different reasons…

1. My over-the-top talented sister - Allie - painted this beauty. She took elements from Brazos House Retreat and Casa de Milagros, incorporating them into her artwork - e.g. fishing, chickens, wildflowers, donkeys and gardens. She painted those elements on to cowboy boots … and Bootsie was born.

2. My father and our cousin, Mary, spearheaded this fund-raising campaign for the Glen Rose Lions Club. They initially sold 45 dinosaurs to local businesses and organizations. Then, they sold 15 more. (Raising a grand total of $55,000+) Now, when you drive around Glen Rose, Texas, you can see these prehistoric masterpieces displayed. (FYI: Glen Rose is the Dinosaur Capital of Texas.)

3. I’m thrilled that I played a very small role in this project. About a year ago, I threw out this crazy idea during a family dinner. The Lions Club was searching for an outside-the-box fund-raising initiative. I simply said, “Wouldn’t it be cool if…” Dad, Mary and the rest of GR Lions liked the idea and totally ran with it. It turned out so AWESOME, and a lot of money was raised to pour back into community.

The Cowboy Perspective

A HUGE thanks to Neil Dudley for bringing me on as a podcast guest. We had a tremendous conversation about faith, mind-set and head trash. I also discussed the death of my running streak, power of affirmations and my “diet.”

Abundance.

I had so many options for my Word of the Year. I considered “Grace” and “Resilience.” I thought about “katischuó,” which means the strength that prevails.

I opted for “Abundance.”

The deciding factor came down to the complexity of this beautiful and powerful word. I knew it would catch people off guard. I knew it would elicit the question: WTF?!?!

It’s definitely not your hair-on-fire, run-through-a-brick-wall, pregame rah-rah word. Or is it?

It’s a reminder that when we have our priorities in line - putting God, His kingdom and His righteousness first - we will be given more than we ever dreamed of, asked for and/or possibly imagined. He wants to bless us. We deserve His blessings.

Radical honesty: I can’t swear that I always believed that.

For a majority of my life, I didn’t feel like I deserved those blessings. I was broken. I was flawed. I was lost and sinful. I felt unworthy of God’s love.

My heart has changed. My priorities are realigned. Things will be different in 2023.

Important: This is NOT about money or stuff. It’s about God’s mercy, peace and love. It’s me believing (after all these years), that I AM worthy of ALL of His blessings. Ephesians 3:20 says: “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.”

Here is the rah rah … when you believe that God wants to bless you abundantly, fear is shackled … your confidence becomes unmeasurable … you step out of your comfort zone with smirk and a swagger … you feel unstoppable. Why? Because you cannot fail! You might not win every “game, and you might come up short in certain situations, but God will still be right there, loving you and ready to bless you in another wonderfully great way.

Happy New Year! My prayer is that YOU have an abundant 2023, too.
