The stark power of these polyphonically layered chants in Arabic, affixed by the depths of calculated silence, creates an immersive and suspenseful sonic experience that transcends time and influence, space and place. A longtime staple of the local electronic music scene with his hypnotic techno outings as YZ, Younes Zarhoni’s latest focus is on the compositional power of pure harmony and silence: namely, his polyphonic renditions of medieval mystical poetry, sung in multiple voices and left to solemnly radiate beyond their given spatial grounds. Stripped of all instrumental accompaniments, what you get is Gregorian chant meets Boyz 2 Men, articulated by the lyrical ineffability of Arabic tongues and finding their rhythm in the silences that act as the juncture between observation and anticipation. In these 20 minutes of verse, Zarhoni oversteps the margins of categorization to deliver an immersive story of song, flowing freely and sustaining the arc of the narrative long after it has ebbed into silence.

In Sumer is Icumen In we see Qoté orchestrating vivid rites of polished futures with this impish collection of sparkling sounds. In the words of José Badía Berner, “at times reminiscent of Hans-Joachim Roedelius' enveloping arrangements, Maibaum's ambiances rely on mild repetitive patterns subsequently textured by prickling sprouts, mechanic dislocations and revamps that stoke and brighten the stirring motions… [Sumer Is Incumen In] is a tale of regeneration, of spring's delicate procedures and allure, a celebration of gracious and fortunate junctions between nature and machinery.”

A return to shows ~ and releases! ~ this very Saturday 22/06🌞 We'll be back at the Parc de la Fonderie for the second coming of bliss and abyss as part of Festival de la fête de l'éléphant neighborhood fest! For this sophomore Block Party @ Fête de l'Eléphant we lock trunks with our favorite Molenbeekian cabal in an afternoon of sunny sights, sounds, and hopefully weather too. Hypnotic violins, chillful psychedelia and magical mushroom music form the core sprawling celebratory rituals for this year’s strange solstice ~ the ushering of Maibaum’s debut release is a reason to rejoice! + it's free!

TODAY marks the release of K126: AYA SUZUKI - WINGED SEEDS !!

The debut album of Brussels based Japanese percussionist Aya Suzuki recorded during a summer residency at STUK - House for Dance, Image & Sound, presents the work of a musician whose ingenuity is in full flight. Clay pots, vibraphone, aluphone, bowls, and, of all things, rice, are her tools for conjuring arresting atmospheres through intricate fantasias and serene abstractions where sound and silence share an equal and deliberate weight that charge each moment, suspending time and place into a magical stasis.

LAST HIGHLIGHT BEFORE TOMORROW'S KRAAK FESTIVAL 2024 ~ a glance at the visual work of Hungarian composer Tibor Szemző, whose work spans over multiple decades of multidisciplinary action and exploration, from minimalist expandings to new age understandings 🗺 Having been a founding member of Budapest avant-garde collective Group 180, he branched out on his own in the 80s, creating diaphanous soundscapes which have an instant recognizability while ostentatiously defying all attempts at categorization. Get a taste for the aesthetics ahead of the big day tomorrow at Het Bos!
