The Coast Guard awarded a contract to Insitu Inc. of Bingen, Washington, for procurement of small unmanned aircraft system (sUAS) capability for the national security cutters. “The sUAS has already proven itself to be a transformational technology on the technology employment, and the deployment of this capability to the entirety of the NSC fleet is an incredibly important first step in realizing the Coast Guard's vision of fleet-wide UAS implementation,” said Cmdr. Coast Guard Offloads 6 Tons of Cocaine in Port Everglades.
The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter James offloaded approximately 6 tons of cocaine on May 10 in Port Everglades worth an estimated $180 million seized in international waters in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. The drugs represent six separate suspected drug smuggling vessel interdictions off the coasts of Central and South America, and Mexico, by three Coast Guard cutters between late February and mid-April. The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) is 75 percent structurally complete following the recent installation of the forward area of the ship’s main deck. “Many of the improvements we have made over the construction of CVN 78, including increased pre-outfitting and performing more complex assemblies in our shops, will allow us to launch the ship three months earlier than planned,” said Lucas Hicks, Newport News’ vice president, CVN 79 program. USS Lexington wreckage
Wreckage from USS Lexington was discovered on March 4 by the expedition crew of Research Vessel (R/V) Petrel. “Lady Lex” was found 3,000 meters (approximately two miles) below the surface, resting on the floor of the Coral Sea more than 500 miles off the eastern coast of Australia. Navy’s 2019 budget proposal
The Navy’s 2019 budget proposal increases ship and aircraft procurement. President Donald J. Trump has proposed a fiscal 2019 budget for the Department of the Navy of $194.1 billion, including Overseas Contingency Operations (OCO) funds, an increase of $12.6 billion (7 percent) over the request for 2018. The funding, part of the $686 billion budget request for the entire Defense Department — not including $30 billion of defense spending by the Department of Energy and other departments — includes increases in shipbuilding and aircraft procurement and funding of the Marine Corps personnel to the Corps’ desired end strength. The crew of U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star completed their mission Feb. 6 in support of National Science Foundation (NSF) after cutting a resupply channel through 15 miles of Antarctic ice in the Ross Sea and escorting supply vessels to the continent, the Coast Guard reported. JUNEAU, Alaska — The Coast Guard concluded its annual Arctic Shield operations Nov. 6 with the closure of its Forward Operating Location in Kotzebue and the departure of the Cutter Healy from the Arctic, the Coast Guard said in a release.
