The week of June 24, 1967, the third studio album by The Monkees "Headquarters" hit #1 on the Billboard 200, for one week produced by Chip Douglas. It was replaced at #1 by The Beatles "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band".
It was released May 22, 1967, after the first season of their television series had concluded and was the first album on which the group members made substantial songwriting and instrumental contributions, rather than relying on session musicians and professional songwriters.
"Headquarters" became the group's third consecutive No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified double platinum in the United States with sales of more than two million copies within the first two months of release. It also peaked at No. 2 on the UK charts.
It was recorded February 23 – April 18, 1967 at RCA Studios in Hollywood, engineered by Hank Cicalo.
