Remembering singer, songwriter, and producer Lee Hazlewood who was born Barton Lee Hazlewood on this date July 9, 1929 in Mannford, OK.

He spent his teenage years in Port Neches, Texas, He studied for a medical degree at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. He served with the United States Army during the Korean War.

Following discharge from the military in 1953, Hazlewood did not return to his studies. He worked as a disc jockey in Coolidge, Arizona and two years later, moved to KRUX radio in Phoenix. During that time, he was already writing songs and formed his own record label, Viv.

His first hit single as a producer and songwriter was "The Fool", recorded by rockabilly artist Sanford Clark in 1955. He partnered with pioneering rock guitarist Duane Eddy, producing and co-writing a string of hit instrumental records. "Rebel Rouser", released in 1958 was a hit in the US and in the UK; Eddy would eventually have another 14 US hits, including "Peter Gunn", "Boss Guitar", "Forty Miles of Bad Road", "Shazam!" and "(Dance With The) Guitar Man".

Hazlewood is perhaps best known for having written and produced the 1966 Nancy Sinatra U.S./UK No. 1 hit, "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'" and "Summer Wine", the latter first recorded with Suzi Jane Hokom in 1966.

Hazlewood also wrote "How Does That Grab Ya, Darlin'", "Friday's Child", "So Long, Babe", "Sugar Town" and many others for Sinatra. Among his most well-known vocal performances is "Some Velvet Morning", a 1967 duet with Sinatra. He performed that song along with "Jackson" on her 1967 television special Movin' With Nancy. Early in 1967, Lee produced the number 1 hit song for Frank and Nancy Sinatra "Somethin' Stupid". The pair became the only father-daughter duo to top the Hot 100. The record earned a Grammy Award nomination for Record of the Year and remains the only father-daughter duet to hit No. 1 in the U.S.

For Frank Sinatra's 1967 detective film, "Tony Rome", Hazlewood wrote the theme song which was performed by Nancy. He wrote "Houston", a 1965 US hit recorded by Dean Martin. He produced several singles for Martin's daughter, Deana Martin, including her country hit, "Girl of the Month Club", while Deana was a teenager. Other tunes on that project were "When He Remembers Me", "Baby I See You" and "The Bottom of My Mind", all recorded during the 1960s.

Hazlewood wrote "This Town", a song that was recorded by Frank Sinatra that appeared on his 1968 album Greatest Hits.

In 1967, Hazlewood started his own record label, LHI Records (Lee Hazlewood Industries). Though it did not receive much attention at the time, the International Submarine Band, led by a then-unknown Gram Parsons, signed with LHI in 1967 and released their one and only album, "Safe at Home".

In the 1970s, Hazlewood moved to Stockholm, where he wrote and produced the one-hour television show "Cowboy in Sweden" together with friend and director Torbjörn Axelman, which also later emerged as an album.

Throughout the late 1970s and 1980s, Hazlewood was semi-retired from the music business. In 2007, Reprise/Rhino Handmade Records posthumously released "Strung Out On Something New: The Reprise Recordings", a set of his work at Reprise from 1964-1968 (excluding the Nancy Sinatra recordings).

Hazlewood died August 4, 2007 at the age of 78.

The band "Them", were a Northern Irish band that formed in Belfast in April 1964, most prominently known for the garage rock standard "Gloria" and launching singer Van Morrison's musical career. The group was marketed in the United States as part of the British Invasion. The original five member band consisted of Morrison, Alan Henderson, Ronnie Millings, Billy Harrison and Eric Wrixon.

They scored two hits in 1965 with "Baby, Please Don't Go" and "Here Comes the Night". Van Morrison quit the band in 1966 and went on to a successful career as a solo artist. Although Them had a short-lived existence, the Belfast group had considerable influence on other bands, such as The Doors.

Here is a live 1965 performance of the song that brought them world fame… the song we all danced to and sang with every time it came on the radio so many years ago!

Try this one for a 58 year old flashback... to 1966! Let's all go for an Ectodelic Trip to the Civic Auditorium in San Jose, with the Jefferson Airplane, along with the E-Types, & William Penn & his Pals for a one night only show. All for just $2.25 at the door! Certainly is a Classic "Poster From The Past" which was printed an amazing four times!
I have been told that the artist of this poster was Jim Michaelson who was working with Sparta graphics. Later on in his carrier he worked for Disney as poster artist for some animated features. However, other than this one, I have not seen, or am familiar with any other of his work that I know of.
He passed away a few years ago. R.I.P. 😢

The resident Rock artist from Detroit, Gary Grimshaw totally outdid himself when he designed this beauty! This "Poster From The Past" was used to promote a Russ Gibb show called the “First Annual Detroit Rock & Roll Revival,” which was held at the Michigan State Fairgrounds on this day in May, 55 years ago in 1969 . The band lineup was totally amazing that included MC5; Chuck Berry, Dr. John, Johnny Winter; Iggy & the Stooges, The James Gang, Terry Reid, The Armboy Dukes, SRC, The Frost, The Rationals, Teegarden & VanWinkle, Lyman Woodard, The Up, Wilson Mower Pursuit, 3rd Power, New York Rock & Roll Ensemble, David Peel & the Lower East Side, The Red White & Blues, Sky, Train, Savage Grace and probably more than I can remember! Listen here when I say without a doubt that this show Kicked Royal Ass !

By this point, the shows at the Grande Ballroom, Detroit's premiere venue, had all but come to an end. Russ Gibb (the guy that ran the Grande Ballroom) promoted a few of these larger festivals—this one was the first—followed by a Halloween 1969 show at Olympia Stadium, and one show each in St. Louis and Cincinnati in March 1970. Posters for all of these events range from scarce to ultra-rare. When you can find an original one of these it can bring a grand or more for a nice one! What more can you say about a "Poster From The Past" and a show with this pedigree but “WOWZER”!

Mid 1968 is arguably the best possible time to have caught Hendrix in concert. He was playing at his most joyful and carefree, and the trappings of success hadn't yet taken a toll on his mental health. He was also developing at an incredible rate during this time and beginning work on the Electric Ladyland album, which would find him experimenting more than ever before.

This show catches Hendrix in a very comfortable and playful mood and engaging in humorous dialogue with the audience. At one point, someone yelled "Take off your hat, Jimi!" to which he replies, "I'll take off my hat if you take off your pants!" amidst cheers and laughter from the audience.

It was 56 years ago on May tenth 1968 that the Jimi Hendrix Experience played for one night only (two shows) at the Fillmore East in New York City. Light show provided by Joshua Lights! Artist for this "Poster From The Past" was David Byrd. It was printed two times.

Remembering audio engineer Larry Levine who was born on this date May 8, 1928 in New York, NY.

Levine left the U.S. military in 1952. When he got back, he would often hang out at Gold Star Studios in Hollywood because his cousin Stan Ross and friend Dave Gold both worked there. He was able to get training as a recording engineer at no cost to the studio through the G.I. Bill.

Levine was responsible for getting the "Wall of Sound" sound for Phil Spector while working with the Wrecking Crew at Gold Star. Included on Spector's hits were, "Be My Baby" "Then He Kissed Me", "River Deep, Mountain High" "A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector" and many other hits.

He engineered so many iconic records such as "Pet Sounds" from the Beach Boys, as well as Eddie Cochran's recordings.

Levine received the 1966 Grammy Award for Best Engineered Recording - Non-Classical, for the recording of "A Taste of Honey" performed by Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass. The recording also won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 1966.

Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss asked Levine to leave Gold Star to become Chief Engineer at A&M Records in 1967. They just purchased the Charlie Chaplain lot and Levine was the driving force in building A&M Records by hiring the engineers and getting the equipment needed.

Levine died May 8, 2008 at the age of 80.

On April 22 of 1968, Colgems Records released the fifth studio album by The Monkees. It would prove to be an album of changes and the beginning of many new directions for the manufactured group.

Today it is no secret that the producers of the band's first two albums used all studio musicians for the recorded music, as the four Monkees were hired primarily as actors and singers, not players. Having fought and won total creative control over the music by January of 1967, their following music was all them while still being augmented occasionally by studio cats. But a curious thing happened after gaining that control. Each member of the band started to produce their own songs and in doing so, would once again turn to the expert studio musicians of Los Angeles today known as the Wrecking Crew so they were basically right back where they had been at the beginning. An agreement was made with Colgems Records that these songs would, when finished and submitted, be tagged "produced by The Monkees". But with only a few exceptions, they were individual solo projects by the individual members with the other guys thrown in to make them as if from the group. And though they received credit on album as producers, these sessions, which took place all around town in different studios, were produced by Colgems President Lester Sill, jazz musician Shorty Rogers, or Brendan Cahill with input by the band members.

The music on "The Birds..." is as diverse as the individual members' backgrounds and interests. Davy Jones's songs leaned more toward his stage musical roots while Mike Nesmith's country interests were mixed with psychedelic flavorings. Micky Dolenz, who had to learn how to play drums for the TV part of the show, was rooted in rock 'n' roll and soul music. Folk musician Peter Tork, who would get fed up with the whole "business" of how things were handled and leave the group in December, had all of his submitted songs rejected by the label and is only heard on one song playing piano.

"The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees" would be the first album to not reach #1 on the Billboard charts, peaking at #3 in May of '68. It would be certified Gold by the RIAA and then Platinum in August of 1994. "Daydream Believer" would reach #1 and "Valleri" would hit the #3 spot. On the original vinyl release, Mike played on four songs: "Dream World", "We Were Made For Each Other", "I'll Be Back Up On My Feet" and "The Poster". The Rhino Records re-releases added three songs that Mike was on: "It's Nice To Be With You", "War Games" and "I'm Gonna Try".

Personnel on the songs Mike contributed to included:

The Monkees - "producer"
Shorty Rogers - arrangements
Don McGinnis - arrangements
Mike Deasy - guitar
