You give up when you’re working towards something and you don’t see any progress. You’re demotivated because youre trying to achieve this big and monumental objective and it’s still not done.
Let’s break it up and break it down.
Step 1: Set a Clear Direction
Where are we going? Are we going left, right? Up? Down? Start by forming a mental representation of your objective. What is it? Where is it? What colour? Naming and articulating your goal makes it tangible. It starts to take form. Now, you can look at it. You have a vision of it. You can look at it. If you can see it, you can move towards.
Step 2: Prioritize. And Identify accelerators.
Let me break that down.
You’ve got to prioritize and emphasize what keeps your eyes on the prize.
That sounded like a rap line. Huh!
You need to Identify accelerators and brakes, whether they’re in the form of tasks or people.
Even now that you have a clear and articulated vision of your goal.
Recognizing what moves you forward and what moves you back is crucial to making progress therefor crucial to your ability to see progress.
Step 3: Break it Down and Act
With a defined direction and priorities, the final step is to execute. Your goal might be so big. So important. That it’s frightening.
Break it down into manageable tasks.
Divide the process into steps, then further segment those steps into smaller tasks.
You can’t do a 5 year task in 24h.
Write down what you should in the next 3 months.
Write down what needs to be done in the next week to move closer.
Moving a week worth of work is still hard to pull off.
Now write down a 10 min task that will get you started. Do that.
A 10 min job. Check. Make a checklist.
If you pay attention to your 10 min achievements you’ll see progress. If you stack them up, do that 6 times, you will see 1 hour progress on your checklist.
Repeat.
Follow these three steps:
1. Set a clear direction
2. Prioritize your accelerators
3. Break down and act
