March 31 1979 a group of gasoline-blooded scofflaws assembled behind the Lock, Stock and Barrel in Darien, CT for the start of what would be the last Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash. The illegal coast-to-coast race protesting the 55 mph speed limit spawned several feature films and became a pop-culture phenomenon.

Playing at @mahoningdriveintheater: The Cannonball Run premiered in June 1981. Critics burned it, the box office was great! To this day people love the movie and it’s become a cult classic. Few know it was based on the true story of an illegal street race across the USA. A documentary series and movie relaunch are in the works.

The Real Cannonball Run 1979: Rick Doherty and his RX-7 at the end of the illegal 3000 mile dash from Darien CT to Redondo Beach CA. The real Dennis „Mad Dog“ Menesini, Charlie “Coyote” Robison, Ken “Batman” Smith, and
Mark “Map Reader” Miller. Their Chevrolet C30 Silverado Big Dooley Crew Cab 454 truck finished 5th overall from Darien CT to Redondo Bech CA despite a long stop with cops in Arizona. They started the 1979 Cannonball east to west coast race by crashing through a fence to create a short cut onto Interstate 95 („If you’re gonna be a bear, be a grizzly,“ was the Menesini mantra).
The Dually averaged 5.4 miles to the gallon and consumed 590 gallons of high-test
to win the „Friends of OPEC“ Cannonball award.

The Cannonball Run movie took the protest against the 55 mph speed limit mainstream in 1981 and became the fictional amplifier to the real Cannonball Run of the previous decade.

COVID lockdown 2020 opened a new chapter in Cannonball history. Comfortably cruising the deserted Interstates at a nice clip to get from New York to Los Angeles 🇺🇸 was suddenly more sensible than boarding a virus-infested airliner 🦠 😷. @arnesantics @switchcars @dunadeldaryoush
On Saturday, June 24th, The Mahoning Drive-In Theater asks, “What do you do when you’ve done it all?”
CANNONBALL!
Get ready to hop in the car and head for the horizon as we present the classic all-star no-rules road race comedies THE CANNONBALL RUN (1981) and CANNONBALL RUN II (1984), along with rare footage and special surprises!
The Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Sea Memorial Trophy dash was an actual underground road race launched by CAR & DRIVER editor Brock Yates in the early 70s, and was twice the subject of a big screen treatment before the stars aligned with Hal Needham’s THE CANNONBALL RUN in 1981, one of the most popular films of that year, starring Burt Reynolds, Dom DeLuise, Farrah Fawcett, Dean Martin, Adrienne Barbeau, Sammy Davis, Jr, Roger Moore, Jackie Chan and countless others, not to mention the Lamborghini Countach, the dream car of a generation. A wild, stunt-filled, laugh-a-mile adaptation that’s more fact-based than most viewers ever realized, it launched a million scofflaw daydreams and Cannonball record attempts that continue to this day. We’re thrilled to present a rare 35mm print of this haven of highway hooliganism on the big screen, where you can sit behind the wheel of your own mean machine and virtually head for the Portofino Inn.
We follow that with the equally all-star and arguably sillier sequel, CANNONBALL RUN II (presented digitally), with our old pals out for high-speed cross-country vehicular mayhem once again, interrupted by mobsters, melees and monster trucks! Featuring returning cast members Reynolds, DeLuise, Jamie Farr, and Jack Elam, and new petrol pals Don Knotts, Catherine Bach, Charles Nelson Reilly, Frank Sinatra and a limo-driving orangutan! Plus, a theme song by Menudo!
We’re inviting former Cannonball racers and their cars to join us for this once-in-a-lifetime screening and celebration of these classics.
Gates at 6pm each night. Showtime at Sundown.
