MASTS 2023: BukSU Settles for Bronze in Contemporary Dance Ousting the Rest of Region X SUCs

“Women should be respected. Women should be loved and cared (for) no matter what – unsa ilang size, color, etc.” – Coach John Micheal Gemilga

A piece dedicated to women was the inspiration behind the story offered by BukSU’s contemporary dance contenders. It depicts the revenge of a woman who suffered from violence, r**e, and abuse and takes revenge in the form of “barang” - a kind of black magic, specifically a malevolent use of sympathetic magic, against the men who wronged her. The twist added was that instead of the traditional “manika” or doll, the medium used was a gallon. Full of spite with what had been done to her, she offered her soul to the gallon. Whatever was done to the gallon will also be done to her abusers. The piece was intended to show what a woman is capable of to avenge herself. The goal of the piece was to make people realize that violence is never right, and that karma is bigger than anyone or anything.

“I am so happy with the routine, well applauded actually, well applauded jud siya. Mao lang to akong target. Hopefully, papasok sa PASUC” – Coach John Michael Gemilga

During the MASTS Games 2023 held at the University of Southern Mindanao, Kabacan, North Cotabato, BukSU’s representatives clinched the third spot – earning them a ticket towards PASUC 2023 as they managed to overcome the rest of the Region X contenders.

The entire BukSU community could not be more prouder of your achievement Coaches and Players! Well done BukSUans! Salamat sa pagsukol!

MASTS 2023: BukSU Championed in Indigenous Dance

Pansak si Laley is a dance performed on top of seven porcelain plates originating from Lamitan, Basilan by the Yakan Ethno Linguistic Group.

"Laley" in Yakan literally means "plate." The Pansak si Laley is a dance showing a lady's skill in balancing and walking gracefully atop seven (7) porcelain plates while going through the motions of the dance exhibiting languid hand movements and intricate footwork stances symbolic of the age-old practices of the traditional cycle of rice production.

With skill and grace indeed the representatives of BukSU showcased in the Indigenous Dance category in the recently concluded MASTS Games 2023 as they put BukSU on the pedestal of recognition and excellence through the commendable presentation of the literature.

“Gihatag jud sa ginoo ang among mga pag-ampo. Practice makes permanent, not practice makes perfect – sige lang jud og practice and practice until makuha jud nimo ang sakto” the Indigenous dance coach, Sir Jiomer Pacquiao said on the interview regarding the steps taken to achieve the win.

This win paves the way for BukSU's future indigenous dancers.
Salamat sa Pagsukol BukSUans! We are immensely proud of you!

'WAG KANG PABEBE!'

Timidity and the opinion of others have no place in the domain of real confidence. This is what Mx. Justine Rey Quinto showed during their performance at the Street Dance Competition (Solo Category) of the MASTS Socio-cultural Festival 2022.

The undaunted performance directly tells one to set aside the trait of being 'pabebe' and freely embrace one's true self. It is an explicit statement of proving others wrong.

Quinto was awarded as the 3rd Runner-up for the said competition.

Below are some of Quinto's daring moments.

'THEY MAY NOT DESERVE FREEDOM BUT THEY DESERVE LOVE'

As they utilized dance to convey a social message, the BukSU participants for the Contemporary Dance (Group Category) competition fearlessly focused their ex*****on on the luckless situation of misunderstood and human rights-deprived prisoners.

Centering their message about not being judgmental towards such people but patiently UNDERSTAND and LOVE them, the performance of the group impacted both the minds and the hearts of the spectators.

They may have presented a bleak situation but the result of the competition calls for a celebration as they bagged the Silver Medal
(1st Runner Up)!!!

"PARA KAY MAMA'T PAPA"

Mr. Alex Panglao, BukSU's participant for the Contemporary Dance (Solo Category) Competition during the MASTS Socio-cultural Festival 2022, stirred the audience's emotions as he focalized his performance around the sacrifice that a son can do both for his parents and country.

The performance is indeed a realization that leaving is not always an unfortunate thing but an ultimate expression of familial love.

Through his prowess and the inspiration he got from his late father, Mr. Panglao grabbed the Silver Medal (1st Runner-up) for the said competition.

MASTS 2022: FOLK DANCE
(SOCIO-CULTURAL FESTIVAL)

THERE'S A FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING!

For the very first time, BukSU's Folk Dance Team came out to be the CHAMPION of this year's MASTS Folk Dance Competition!!!

Inspired by Negros Occidental's Regatones or traveling fish vendors, BUKSU Folk DanceTeam's performance artistically narrates how traveling fish vendors used to tease women fish buyers through the "tuwangan" or the tricky maneuvering of their "paraka" baskets while waiting for the fish supply in the shoreline of Cadiz (now Cadiz City), Negros Occidental.

Take a look at the defining moments of BUKSU Folk Dance Team during their performance.
