Out of all their recordings, ‘Rubber Soul’ was the album where the Beatles became artists in their own right. Before 1965 they released pop songs to please their fans- pop music about holding hands and sharing secrets. All of which made them irresistible to their young girl fans buying the records.

It is thought that a meeting with Bob Dylan in 1964 changed the band’s attitudes. They didn’t want to make music just to sell records, they want to express themselves and have more freedom. It turned out to be pivotal moment for the group.

The Beatles recorded the album in London in October 1965 and it was released in December. They had full commitment to the album over 4 weeks.

The title ‘Rubber Soul’ comes from ‘plastic soul’, which is a term used to describe white musicians playing a traditionally black style of music- essentially “fake” soul music. Paul heard the quote from an American who described Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones as “good, but plastic soul”.

Paul says that this was “the germ of ‘Rubber Soul’.”

“And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make”

Not many bands get to write their own epitaphs, but the Beatles aren’t just any band.

For the finale (except for the tacked-on ‘Her Majesty’) of the group’s last recorded album, Paul wanted to come up with something special.

After each member took his turn in the spotlight (drum solo for Ringo, rotating guitar solos for Paul, George and John), Paul delivered the above couplet, which he said was inspired by Shakespeare.

Not only is it a wonderfully simple philosophical moment, it dovetails with the Beatles’ other defining message: All you need is love.

The strings swell, the harmonies descend and the result is a perfect moment at the end of a great album and the swan song of a great band.

“John was the ne'er-do-well father, Paul was the hardworking mother trying to keep everything together. George was a slightly surly teenager, and Ringo was this happy-go-lucky young kid with his model airplane. That's really how it was.” ― Ray Connolly

Connolly started as a graduate trainee at the Liverpool Daily Post, Connolly then moved to the London Evening Standard where he interviewed, among others, many '60s and '70s rock stars and cultural icons, including the Beatles. Many of his interviews with the Beatles are collected in his eBook The Ray Connolly Beatles Archive.

He was due to interview John on the day he was murdered, an event he wrote about in the BBC radio play Unimaginable.

In 2018, he published a biography callled Being John Lennon – A Restless Life.

Best Guest Performances on Beatles Records

Andy White on “Love Me Do” (1962)

Even though Ringo was already a band member, session drummer White was behind the kit on the recording of the band’s first-ever single release as The Beatles.

It’s not the most complicated song for drummers — and Ringo played it just fine on the album version — but White, at the very least, didn’t get in the way of it becoming a Top 20 hit in Britain, assuring the band would get another shot in the studio.

They would turn that shot into the smash hit “Please Please Me,” starting Beatlemania in earnest.

The song was recorded on three occasions with three different drummers - Pete Best on June 6, 1962, Ringo on September 4, 1962 and Andy White's version a week later.

The Andy White version of the track was included on The Beatles' debut UK album, Please Please Me, The Beatles' Hits EP, and subsequent album releases on which "Love Me Do" was included as well as on the first US single release in April 1964.
