Another round of wind and hail storms across the Texas Panhandle, South Plains, Permian Basin and later down into the San Angelo and rolling plains out east later tonight.

I think this is mostly going to be a giant hail (tennis balls or maybe larger!) and high winds. Tornado potential is not high, but it's not zero either, mostly along any boundary and probably short lived if we do get one. The hail will be enough!

Probably something like we've seen in recent days.

I unfortunately will not be able to be out chasing today, I have prior obligations, but watch you local weather news sources for updates!

POST IS NOW OUTDATED: TUESDAY 5/28/24 WEATHER UPDATE - DRAMATIC CHANGE

The MCS that went through the eastern half of Texas earlier today has changed the afternoon/evening forecast considerably, mostly due to a huge outflow boundary easily seen on the Lubbock , TX radar image I included here. Not only does it bring a significant source of lift and a focus for thunderstorm development, it also brought higher moisture with it.

Most intense storms should fire off this boundary and move east-southeast into the higher moisture, but any storm that can turn right and ride down this boundary would have a much enhanced chance of tornadoes! At any rate, all hazards possible this afternoon with any storm.

Here we go again! This time in/near my home area. Pay attention tomorrow people! This season has proven to be a rough one! This one is for tomorrow TUESDAY MAY 28, 2024. Not just home area but a large part of Texas. Although model output it appears much of the central Texas weather may be in the form of high winds/hail and the tornadoes may be more in the northwest part of the outlook. We'll see what morning data brings. I wouldn't be surprised to see this evolve into an overnight derecho across TX which could be devastating in a wide swath.

I edited my previous post to include this image of the wedge tornado just before it hit the gas station at Lone Oak road in North Texas, Cook County. South of Valley View. But I wanted to make it it's own post, and also include a couple of low resolution images I was able to grab from my back camera as I was out west of Valley View on FM 922.

The lightning was only very brief Cloud to Cloud flashes. Wasn't much to the eye, or the camera. I had to go frame by frame to pull out these. It was even closer when I was out west than I thought.

Note that this camera is 170 degree wide angle camera, so it looks farther away then it is. The gas station would be behind the bus in front of me ahead.

This was perilous in the best of times. I couldn't see it. I thought I had more time. Had this been daylight I would have stopped there. Note the speed of traffic on I35 at this time.

To be sure, NO ONE travelling on I35 during those moments had any clue a tornado was that close, aside from any warnings they might have got on their phones.

A number of people have messaged asking if I made it out alright, that noticed my spotter network icon in close proximity to that tornado in N. TX last night, and apparently noticed it didn't move a lot after it crossed I35. I passed that gas station about 60 seconds before it got hit.

Yes, I'm alright, at least physically.

Last time I experienced anything like this was the night Hallam, NE got wiped off the map in 2004. I never wanted to see this again.

I'm completely exhausted today. I have a lot to tell, I need to process it first.

Spend several hours post tornado helping get people out of what remained of their lives...until I was so exhausted I had nothing left to give. I think of all the emergency workers that still have so much work ahead of them...

So many people on my mind from last night. Those that were driving the wrong way IN to the tornado as I was running east to get away from it. Did they make it?

The guy in the rural fire truck I passed that was sitting there storm spotting trying to protect his community. Did you make it?

All those cars I saw at that packed gas station on I35 as the power blinked out as I was passing it running south to try and save my own self. I already know how that went.

And most especially those of you I took to the hospital in Denton. I hope you are better today. Most on my mind is the 68 yo woman we pulled out of her house she was trapped in. She had a bad head injury. I really hope you are ok today. You reminded me so much of my mother that passed some years ago. You have the most amazing neighbors who left their own destroyed houses to come help get you out.

MAY 25, 2024 HEADS UP N TX-OK-KS
The included graphic is the tornado outlook potential for this afternoon/evening/night. Rather than jump on the hype train all over the place, just going to give you the short version.

Yes, there are a lot of dynamics in place that will cause storms today to be exceptionally violent most likely. That said, there are some IFs in the equation, it's a complex forecast today and many IFs could prevent this from being an outbreak, but if most of those IFs come together, then there very well could be an outbreak. Some of the supercell parameters that look like will be in place are on the high end of the charts.

THIS POST IS NOW OUTDATED

The bottom line for you the reader. You very well may not see a storm even if you live in this area. BUT! If you have a storm nearby, you better well pay attention to the warnings and take your safety precautions, because it's very likely going to be a very violent one, with giant hail up to softball size, hurricane force winds and potentially violent and long tracking tornadoes! Remember, it's May on the Southern/Central Plains and the weather can go bad really quickly!

So, if you are in the outlook area, especially the hatched area PLEASE pay attention to your local weather info resources today, and believe the warnings.

As for me, I'm taking a shot I think on the red river/N Texas area today chasing. I'll be live on here, LSM and Youtube a bit later this afternoon if you'd like to ride along for the chase. I'll get into some more of the setup details on the live stream.

If you know someone in the outlooked area in this graphic, please tag them in this post and/or share it. Thanks!

Blast from the Past! From the early days I chased for KCBD NewsChannel 11 in Lubbock, TX. This aired my second season there in 2006! Technology in that old chase vehicle is ancient now! LOL That was many chase vehicles ago!

I found this in some of my vide library stash. It is originally in SD format, and I upscaled it to HD, but it's not perfect as my old copy has some video artifacts in it. Hopefully it's better anyway.

Time to get those Falken Wildpeak trail tires put on. Those factory Toyo tires are the worse hydroplaning tires I've ever had. These Flakens should handle those dirt roads much better too. Was bit squirrelly on those dirt roads in Oklahoma yesterday. 😳

8:30AM - Here's the updated severe weather outlook. Key messages today: 1) most people will not see a storm, but IF you do, it will be likely be dangerous; and 2) the potential for tornadoes will INCREASE after dark, so do not let your guard down.

**THIS POST IS OUTDATED** SATURDAY MAY 4, 2024: Short on time this morning preparing to chase this afternoon. As such, I'll just bring you what the US National Weather Service Midland Texas has to say about today. Texas Permian Basin and SW Texas pay attention! This area doesn't typically see this level of severe weather risk.

NWS MAF:
"The severe threat today cannot be overstated. The parameters
today rival the most active days we experienced during the
benchmark severe weather season in 2019. Not only are large hail
and tornadoes possible, but very large/significant hail is
expected with any storm that develops, especially during the
afternoon, and the SPC has outlined the central and southeastern
Permian Basin, Lower Trans Pecos, and Stockton Plateau as being at
risk for strong (EF2+) tornadoes. It is imperative that everyone
remains vigilant today, and all should ensure they have multiple
ways to receive warnings and forecast information, and have a plan
to seek shelter, no matter where they may be."**

Going through some tornado video from Clarendon, TX couple days ago, I noticed something on video I missed during all the initial excitement during the tornado.

The original tornado during it's life rotated around a newly forming and rotating wall cloud, which also produced a brief tornado itself, effectively turning the original tornado into a satellite tornado of the 2nd one! Amazing!
Can't wait to get this edited and released for you to view the entire life cycle of it.
