The Crisis in Ohanaeze Ndigbo UK: A Call to Action

By Prince Jerry Amaukwu

The crisis that has plagued Ohanaeze Ndigbo UK branch for years is a direct result of neglecting our cultural heritage and traditional values. By turning it upside down in order to support illegality to suit our own interests and purposes, and by forgetting the very institutions that have defined us as a people, we have reduced a once-powerful organization like Ohanaeze Ndigbo to nothing but a laughing stock in the society.

The root cause of this crisis lies in the actions of individuals who do not understand the importance of traditional institutions and the role of political parties in our community. One single mistake by these individuals has had far-reaching consequences, and it's imperative that we take responsibility for our actions and work towards finding a solution.

I wish to commend Chief Mazi Ignatius Muotoh, a true Igbo stateman based in the United Kingdom, for his tireless efforts in championing the unity and progress of Ndigbo in diaspora. His selfless leadership and dedication to the betterment of the Igbo community are qualities that deserve our utmost respect and admiration.

Chief Mazi Ignatius Muotoh's recent visit to the Enugu state headquarters of Ohanaeze in Nigeria is a testament to his unwavering commitment to finding solutions to the problems that have plagued Ohanaeze Ndigbo UK branch for years. It's unfortunate that despite his efforts in bringing about unity and cohesion, his endeavors were met with resistance and seem to have fallen on deaf ears.

The state of Ohanaeze Ndigbo UK branch has become an embarrassment to the Igbo community, with various factions and groups vying for power and control. This has led to a situation where the organization has become a laughing stock in the eyes of our elders and the wider community. It's imperative that we put aside our differences and work towards a unified Ohanaeze Ndigbo UK.

Following his meeting with Ohanaeze Ndigbo President General Chief Senator John Azuka and his Executive in Enugu state, which produced no results, it's clear that the crisis in Ohanaeze Ndigbo UK branch is far from over. Unfortunately, those who have been making mistakes and supporting illegality have started reaping the consequences of their actions. Some have even gone ahead to renounce their membership in Ohanaeze Ndigbo UK branch, citing the failure of the leadership to provide solutions to the crisis.

I urge all Ndigbo in the UK to put aside their individual interests and work towards a common goal. We must learn to put the interests of the community above the petty squabbles that have held us back for so long. We owe it to ourselves, our children, and our ancestors to work towards a brighter future for the Igbo nation.

The recent developments in Ohanaeze Ndigbo UK branch are a clear indication that more needs to be done to ensure the unity and progress of our community. As we move forward, we must be guided by the principles of unity, solidarity, and the collective good of our people.

I commend Chief Mazi Ignatius Muotoh for his vision and leadership, and I urge all Ndigbo in the UK to join hands in building a stronger, more united, and more prosperous community for all.

PUBLIC STATEMENT

Ohanaeze UK has, by unanimous agreement, resolved to move forward and to formally dissociate from Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide. It is now an established fact of history that the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has become unreliable, politicised, out of touch, and self-serving, having jettisoned both its own Constitution as a binding document and the customs and traditions of Ndigbo as its guiding principles.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, once presumed to champion and defend the interests, aspirations, culture, and traditions of Ndigbo, has by its actions, inactions, utterances, and complicity, become a fully fledged political organisation. It now functions as an extension of the South East Governors’ offices, serving political interests aimed solely at winning elections, thereby contributing to the continued underdevelopment of Alaigbo.

It is also necessary to reiterate the lack of integrity and patriotism within the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, whose duplicity and lip service to the plight and illegal detention of Mazi Nnamdi Okwuchukwu Kanu stand as clear evidence of the moral bankruptcy of our once revered institution.

The leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide now faces a crisis of confidence from Ndigbo at home and abroad, including Ohanaeze UK (Men). Their actions, inactions, and open political affiliations with discredited politicians and organisations in Nigeria and beyond have encouraged massive corruption, not only of our culture and traditions but also of the very institutions meant to protect the welfare of our people. Their silence and complicity have deepened poverty, eroded accountability among politicians, denied opportunities to our youths and graduates, and muted necessary calls to the Lagos State Government and the Federal Government of Nigeria to halt the ongoing illegal harassment, ethnic victimisation, and demolition of Igbo-owned homes and businesses in Lagos and elsewhere.

We seize this opportunity to stand in solidarity with every individual, community, and organisation whose lives and futures are under severe attack by the Nigerian government. We urge our people to remain calm and resolute, and to ensure that, come election time, their votes are never again used against the collective interests of Ndigbo in Nigeria.

We, Ohanaeze UK (Men), therefore formally and unequivocally dissociate ourselves from Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, which has now confirmed itself as a purely political organisation.
