Between her own denial of "Blade" and her mother's voice on her cell phone, Brielle returns to reality. She's scared, she isn't sure what to do - but now she knows. Stopping her father is a way of saving him from being a monster - and it means saving the rest of the world.

She has to stop him.

I just love the relationship between Brielle and her mom. Author Lore made that one of my favorite parts of the Bloodline: Daughter of Blade mini-series and I love to see it continue here.

"Blade" suggests that humanity will not survive his rule. But vampires will always outlast and outhunt them. Brielle can't save her father, she can't save the world. The only way to help her friends and family - is to make them into vampires.

The conceptual idea of Blade going bad - is now may metaphysically real, showing Brielle what waits for her loved ones if she can't "Blade".

Dracula isn't even bothered by the vampire horde that's trying to get at Brielle. He just mows them down and, honestly, he looks pretty cool doing it. But he complains about Varnae's lack of attention on him as a threat.

Varnae responds by slopping all of his dead vampires into a Resident Evil style monstrosity. It's SUPER gross and I love that.

Inside Brielle's mind, she explores her "school", which is also a medieval castle. She's scared and nervous until she finds her father, Blade. She rushes into his arms - and he mists away from her. "She has no need for a blade," he says - WHICH I LOVE BECAUSE HE ISN"T BLADE, RIGHT? He's VARNAE, she just doesn't know that yet.

I also really appreciate the inky black panel borders. I think they do a good job of communicating that we're in an unknown, shifty dreamscape.

Author Danny Lore has Dracula explain (to us) how last issue ended. "Blade"'s bloody misty form isn't physically there. It's like a side effect of "Blade" contacting Brielle's mind. He's trying to get her to join him, as "father" and daughter, and Dracula has to hope that Brielle does not join him.

Don't let this lovely cover by Rod Reis fool one - Brielle does NOT battle Dracula in this one. Instead, she spends the issue being pitched world domination by her "dad" - and contemplating whether or not she should join him.

Drac spends the issue battle the vampires who are trying to kill her.

When it looks like he's about to lose, Baron Blood runs for it - because of course he does. Cap tries to nail him with his shield, but it flies just slightly wrong, missing. This is because this is Cap's silvered-shield - make specifically for fighting vampires or supernatural threats.

Author MacKay SET THIS MISS UP back in issue 14 - when Quicksilver notices that Cap's shield was flying strangely.

That's good plotting.

Within the temple, T'Challa finds some vampire-fish-monster-people - and he mercy kills them.

Don't get me wrong, T'Challa never suffers a fool for long - but I think this is the most brutal takedown I've ever seen him do in a comic. There's no hesitation, no mercy. And no good explanation for who or what these fish dudes are.

With Varnae's forces defeated and his temple struck down, the god Eshu now stands in judgement of his fellow gods. For burning the countryside, Kokou will be bound to it. Bast will as well, as she promised the land to the people they saved. Ptah is the calmest, aware that it was his vibranium that allowed Varnae's attempt to become a god.

This explains why Wakanda worships only these three gods - and not the full six that helped shape it.

I am perplexed by Eshu's metal mask - which feels like a nod to either Dr. Doom or MF Doom. I'm just unsure why the gave him that mask. : \

In Wakanda's past, Kokou rages at Varnae for his attempt to become a god. Manifesting horns and wings of fire, he burns the vampires that Varnae created AND the surrounding countryside.

But at least he looks cool as HECK when he does it.

T'Challa shrugs off the Atlanteans with - electrical blasts and water-bending? WTF? Turns out that drinking Anuket's blood at the end of last issue gave the Black Panther some new - temporary - powers.

Man's got heart-shaped herb powers, vampire powers, and now WATER GOD powers? T'Challa, save some for everyone else!

Dr. Strange's body is healed from it's ordeal. The Dog God leaves Bats, wary of burning out the faithful ghost's energy. And Baron Mordo takes the ghost-body of Victor Strange with him as he leaves - promising death.

Baron Mordo casts a spell to gather energy - and then Bats finishes it off. An incantation is just a story, after all. One that is so convincing that it makes the universe think that it's real. Bats tells us all about how humanity created the Tiger God out of their fear of the dark. But if their fear could create a god - what about humanity's love?

(The Tiger God, btw, is the patron god of the White Tiger line of super-heroes.)

After badgering Rho Rhustane for DAYS, the man finally relents - and transports Minister Ilahn and Reesha to HIS world - Elysia, the homeworld of the god-like First. But instead of grace and beauty, what they find is a chaos.

From Ilahn's perspective, it could use his...influence.

One of my favorite moments in issue 13 are these paired pages. When Sephie and her group are being escorted down, to Anheim, the panels are surrounded by darkness and slowly drop down. It's as if WE are being lead down, into Demetria.

Then, later on in the issue, when we return to Ilahn's story and Cadador, we repeat the idea. We go UP, from below to the surface into the sky. I even like the panel outline differing - a white border for the heroic Sephie, and a black one, or a lack of a border at all, for the more diabolical Ilahn.

Inside the tube, Sephie finds rolls of sketches and paintings, all of them done by her mother. Sephie has never known her mom, who passed shortly after she was born. But getting to see her artwork and read her notes, it gives Sephie a connection that she's never had before.

The only things that she knew about her mother was what others could tell her. Now, she can know her mother AS her mother viewed herself.

This moment is also what leads into our next episode, covering CrossGen Chronicles issue 3.

COMICS! From left to right, Lobo (Dell Comics, 1965), the first African-American character to star in his own comic. Black Lightning (issue 2, DC Comics, 1977), the first African-American superhero at DC to headline his own book. Megaton (issue 4, Megaton Comics, 1986), was a black and white anthology book that started the careers of several creators like Erik Larsen, Rob Liefeld, Butch Guice, Angel Medina and others. Liefeld later bestowed the title “Grandfather of Image Comics” to Megaton writer/publisher Gary Carlson. Original Man (issue 1, Omega 7 Comics, 1992). Original Man was one of the first takes on the concept of a “black Superman”, seeing him fight threats like the Enslaver and the Ayran Avenger.
