Happy Tuesday! Temperatures are on the rise today, but humidity will remain low among plenty of sunshine. Highs will reach the upper-80s in northern communities and low-90s to the south. Be prepared for higher humidity and a chance of strong thunderstorms Wednesday evening as heat indices will rise to nearly 100 degrees during the afternoon and evening. Enjoy another beautiful day today before then.

Welcome to July! Monday has been and will continue to be a fantastic day with highs in the 70s, low humidity, sunshine, and a light breeze. Tuesday will bring more sunshine and low humidity, but temperatures will start to rise.

Heat and humidity return quickly Wednesday. Temperatures will reach the mid-90s during the afternoon and heat index values will once again top out near 100 degrees. This energy in the atmosphere will bring the chance for thunderstorms with a damaging wind threat Wednesday evening. This is an important time to plan, as many will be out at fireworks shows or athletic events. Have a storm safety plan ready for Wednesday evening and remember: "When thunder roars, head indoors!"

STORM FORECAST: Despite the much more comfortable and sunny Monday afternoon, many of us will see some rain and storms throughout the next 48 hours. This will be welcome for many who have dry lawns, but a low risk for damaging wind and small hail does exist each day.

DAY 1 Monday: This threat is primarily overnight into Tuesday morning for our far NW communities. A dissipating line of storms will move into the green shaded region overnight. The line is expected to break down into showers for the rest of us by mid Tuesday morning.

DAY 2: Tuesday Then, showers may redevelop into thunderstorms in the heat of the day early Tuesday afternoon. The greater risk will be NW once again, but anyone shaded in green has a low risk for gusty wind and small hail.

DAY 3 Wednesday: Storms will be a bit more widespread later in the afternoon for most of our coverage area. We may see this region upgraded to a "2-out-of-5" risk (yellow) in tomorrow's outlook. However, it remains "1-out-of-5" due to some questions that remain regarding timing and overall storm coverage.

BUCKEYE COUNTRY SUPERFEST: Attention country music fans! Are you attending the 2024 Buckeye Country Superfest at the 'Shoe this weekend? If so, be prepared for dangerous heat, especially on Saturday, where the heat index is once again expected to rise above 100°. On Sunday, temperatures will feel better, but a cold front will advance through Central Ohio, bringing the chance for a few thunderstorms during the afternoon. A 1-out-of-5 risk for severe storms exists, meaning that severe storms will not impact the entire event, but attendees should be mindful of a safe place in the stadium to take shelter if a strong storm pops up. This would be the covered concourses under the seats.

Stay safe this weekend and enjoy the shows!!

SUMMER SOLSTICE: The summer solstice arrives at 4:50 PM EDT on June 20th! This is the earliest arrival of summer since 1796, when George Washington was president! The reason for the early solstice is a combination of the 2024 leap year and how our Gregorian calendar does not perfectly line up with the 24 hour day and 365 day year (although it's pretty close!) Typically, the solstice arrives on June 21st.

This is also the day that we experience our shortest shadows. I took this photo in my backyard around 1:35 PM, which is "solar noon", or when the sun is the highest in the sky during the day. While days will start getting shorter from here until December 21st, don't worry, the sun still will set around or after 9 PM until late July. HAPPY SUMMER!

POP-UP STORM RISK: Once again, due to excessive heat, our atmosphere will have plenty of energy for pop-up storms after lunchtime today. A few storms may produce gusty wind and hail, although there is no tornado risk. Many will not see any rain or thunder at all, continuing the dry spell from which many gardeners are looking for relief!

17/06/2024

During excessive heat waves, like the event that we are embarking on today, meteorologists will use several different indices or numbers to determine how hot it feels outside and the dangers associated with prolonged exposure to heat.

Many of us are familiar with the "Heat Index" which is essentially what temperature the air feels like to human skin with humidity as a factor. Heat indices across our region will likely reach 100° all week and into next weekend.

However, a less known index is the "Wet Bulb Globe Temperature" or WBGT. The WBGT not only factors in humidity, but also wind speed, cloud cover, and even latitude, or sun angle. WBGT is defined as a "measure of heat stress in direct sunlight."

Because we are experiencing the summer solstice this week, our current heat wave is occurring during the maximum possible solar radiation of the year and under mostly sunny skies. This means that our WBGT will be in a dangerous range, almost the highest possible in the Ohio Valley.

Attached are some helpful graphics to understand both of these numbers. A WBGT will be lower than the heat index, but because it uses a different scale, it is still very telling of the heat danger this week. The "Activity Information" chart is from the Kansas State High School Athletic Association courtesy of the National Weather Service. Their recommendations make sense during a week like this.

The Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission has issued an Air Quality Alert for Central Ohio, from 6 AM this morning to 10 PM EDT this evening.

Levels of ozone within the region may approach or exceed unhealthy standards.

On Alert days, help reduce ozone by taking the following actions:

* Carpool, if possible, bike, walk or take the bus instead of
driving alone.

* Refuel your vehicle after 8 pm.

* Do not idle your vehicle, exhaust contributes to air pollution.

* Mow your lawn in the evening hours and avoid the use of
gas-powered lawn equipment.

HUMIDITY INCREASING: The Ohio Valley is gearing up for a heat wave that will likely set up early next week. We will get a brief preview of the summer heat on Thursday and Friday as dew points increase into:

-The low to mid-60s in our northern communities (humid).
-Mid to upper-60s (muggy) in our central areas.
-Upper-60s to low-70s (really sticky) in our southern zones.

While this won't be the hottest that we will feel in the coming days (that starts Monday), we will need to start preparing for heat safety and making plans to stay hydrated and protected from the sun during outdoor activities.

We will feel some relief on Saturday before the real heat arrives!

OHIO CUP: The Cleveland Guardians are traveling to Cincinnati to take on the Reds tonight and tomorrow (Wednesday) in the first leg of the 2024 Ohio Cup. It seems that we couldn't ask for better baseball weather this week, especially Tuesday evening with temperatures in the 70s during the game. Expect a light breeze during the game both nights with no chance for rain or storms.

The second weekend of June is looking comfortable and sunny across the Ohio Valley! Temperatures will dip into the 50s overnight Friday and early Saturday morning, rebounding to the low-60s by 9AM in most locations. Highs will reach the upper-70s and low-80s. Don't forget sunscreen, the UV index will be as high as it gets throughout the year. We're only 13 days away from the Summer Solstice!

It's a big golf weekend in Ohio, especially with the Memorial Tournament going on in Dublin. That said, if you're heading out for a round of golf anywhere, you'll be in luck on Friday. Plenty of sunshine is in the "fore-cast," but that means the UV index will be very high! A stray shower is possible in NE Ohio in the late afternoon, but most of the day will be dry for everyone.

04/06/2024

SEVERE WEATHER OUTLOOK (WEDNESDAY): Our partners at the Storm Prediction Center/National Weather Service have highlighted a portion of Ohio and Indiana that are under a 1-out-of-5 risk for strong to severe thunderstorms Wednesday evening.

The timing of these storms will likely be:
- In the later afternoon (5-7 PM) for eastern Indiana and western Ohio.
- In the early evening (7-9 PM) for central and north-central Ohio.
- In the late evening and overnight (9PM-1AM) for east-central Ohio through West Virginia.

Our tornado threat is quite low. However, because of the climate history of the region, and the influence of Lake Erie, some of our communities (especially north of US 30) could have some rotation possible in any strong storms that develop. We will be watching this very closely. That said, the main threat is heavy rain and frequent lightning, with one or two reports of damaging wind (not widespread).

Despite the low risk, stay weather aware, and have a way to receive weather watches and warnings, including the ONW App, or a NOAA weather radio.
