“I find that each project - each space - tends to inform its own design direction. During the earliest stages, there are lots of considerations that encourage different design decisions — architecture, room features, prominent furnishings — they can all play a role.”

“Art and photography have always been a part of my life. Having had the great opportunity of growing up immersed in it inherently influences how I view and approach everything I design. Beautiful art pieces and everyday living pieces can coexist in ways people should not shy away from.”

“The star of this lakefront sunroom is the idyllic, sweeping views of Lake Minnetonka. The room’s textures and colors are kept intentionally light, with a punctuation of navy: an unobtrusive palette, welcoming the outside in.”

“I focused on how my clients wanted to live in their new space — and also wanted the space to be able to grow with them. They have a large family and entertaining is important, but I also wanted to provide conversation areas that felt intimate. It’s quite a challenge when you have an open-concept floor plan, so we anchored the conversation areas with rugs and furniture groupings that flowed together seamlessly.”

“Sometimes I have a strong gut instinct on how I think the space will evolve, but it is always an organic journey based on the client and how they live. For this picturesque mountain home, I wanted to use a textured palette verses a true color palette. I went with natural stones like tavertines, natural wood, and stone tile, all of which cool undertones to create texture in every detail. I feel this project best represents my personal styles most closely with the soft tones and different textures, which also reflect the environment.”

“The goal of this project was to restore this Santa Fe home to the stunning and functional historic gem it was meant to be, while overcoming a former 1970s renovation. The homeowner was over the moon about the property, which he had just purchased and was relocating from Dallas to Santa Fe to fulfill a lifelong dream.”

“Montana is a special place. For this project, our client was inspired by flyfishing, and the unique opportunities for the sport most notably found here. The homeowner wanted a place in which they could retreat while feeling completely immersed in the breathtaking landscape surrounding the residence. Because it’s located on a beautiful piece of property in a windswept valley, we had to give special consideration to the design and integrity of the exterior furniture and lighting as it needed to withstand strong winds.”

“Located in the Aspen Mountains and facing the Roaring Fork River, this particular project was organically influenced by its environment and location with a mix of natural materials contrasted with smooth finishes in this home. Our clients’ dream was to have unique spaces that give a nod to industrial materials and yet one that would feel warm and inviting.”

“In this Denver residence, we laid out the first floor as the ‘entertaining mecca.’ The living room is central to the home and is a warm, open and light-filled space that leads into the outdoor living space. The homeowners have an extensive collective of artwork, and it was a designer s dream to work with and around these inspiring pieces. The furnishings, rugs and case goods are all neutral tones of oatmeal with varying textures.”

“When designing a space, we are mindful of a home’s origin. We want our interiors to be natural extensions of their architecture. While architecture itself does not have to dictate a specific direction, it’s important to consider a home’s inherent features and style during the design phase. Very poignantly, art and accessories can truly bring a space to life and complete it. A room without these well-placed details can fall flat, regardless of the furnishings and color.”

“Every project is a canvas to artistically demonstrate what I think the client will desire and a chance to impress them not only with quality drawings, but as design concepts. I don’t want to specialize in any particular area of architecture. I want clients to think of me as ‘their architect.’”

“For design inspiration, I love to shop architectural salvage yards, antique shops, auctions both — online and at auction houses. I love to find that one gem, be it a light fixture, a piece of marble, even unusual art and then the journey begins. I design the entire space around that object for impact and inspiration.”

Joni Spear of shares more about her sources of design inspiration, the importance of finding meaningful and central elements, and the power of art.

We are thrilled to highlight Allison Ewing as this week’s feature in Artful Living. This home, in all its grandeur, is exhibited in the pages of ‘New View: A Curated Visual Gallery – 20 Magnificent Homes by Northeast Architects’.

In the editorial from the real pages of New View, Allison shares:

“I see design as a complex Rubik’s Cube — you have to solve for all conditions to arrive at that perfect solution. And yet, great spaces embody something more — they transcend function to connect people with nature in a fundamental way.”

Experience the full breadth of this stunning project, delight in Allison Ewing’s thoughtful wisdom, and find inspiration in the exceptional work of 19 other architects in “New View: Northeast.” Order your book today.

“The house is on a beautiful lake lot in an established neighborhood and inspired a particular feeling for the design. This home is a contemporary interpretation of a classic lake house with ample entertaining spaces that allowed me to really capitalize on the creativity it provided.”

Rob Turner of CRT Studio expresses his deep love for design, and appreciation for the impact and sensitivities of a home’s surroundings and general environment. He shares more about his process in the pages of Modish: The Book of Great Design.
