Shore Area News Dispatch (S.A.N.D.) BE A CONTRIBUTOR! Feel free to post news, update news and report happenings here. Shore Area News Dispatch (aka S.A.N.D.) was created in July 2012.

The intent of this page is to announce events, news and related information to our followers. Our primary coverage area is from Sandy Hook to Seaside and including all of Monmouth and Ocean Counties. We also post breaking state and national news. Our Page is staffed by a small group of volunteer contributors. Information is obtained and posted. With regards to breaking news, it is importa

nt to note that we are not always able to provide continual updates on incidents posted. This is for several reasons including;
1) We are volunteers and in some cases not able to stay tuned to the emergency radio.
2) Information that may be obtained initially upon dispatch and posted, may not be able to be update due to distance, radio transmission not readable, etc.
3) After the initial post, information is law enforcement sensitive. In this case we post it to alert our followers so that they can stay clear of the area. In all of these situations, we encourage our followers to post updates if they receive accurate information or are able to follow the incident. We ask all followers of S.A.N.D. to be respectful. Vulgar or aggressive posts will result in being banned from the Page. We also sometimes receive complaints about our posts, lack of updates, a disagreement with a post, etc. If you don’t like a post or the page, please feel free to “unlike” us. We do our best to provide a certain kind of service. We thank those who support and follow us.

Next Monday, April 8th, we will experience a total solar eclipse for the first time since 2017, and the last time until 2044! Many parts of the United States including New Jersey will not get a "total" solar eclipse, we will only be getting about 90% of the sun being blocked by the moon, which means there will be no safe time to look at the eclipse without proper eye protection. Viewing the eclipse with the naked eye, through a camera lens, binoculars, or telescope without proper filters and protection can cause instant and permanent damage to your eyes. Sunglasses are NOT sufficient to prevent eye damage, so if you plan to check out the view, be sure to pick up a pair of approved solar eclipse viewers available at most local stores. ***Press Release***

On February 10th, 2024, at 11:22 AM, Sea Girt Police received a call to attend to an incident at Neptune Beach involving a missing child. Upon reaching the location, officers engaged with the parents of a two-year-old boy who had been playing on the beach when the sand around him collapsed. Fortunately, the child's father quickly extricated him within two to three minutes, and the child remained conscious and alert.

Belmar Emergency Medical Services promptly arrived, assisting and transporting the juvenile to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for necessary treatment and observation.

The Sea Girt Office of Emergency Management, Department of Public Works, and Police Department all mobilized to the scene. Borough officials established communication with the US Army Corps of Engineers, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, and Weeks Marine to address the incident. The affected area has been secured, restricting public access, and personnel from Weeks Marine are ensuring on-site security until representatives from the US Army Corps of Engineers and Weeks Marine arrive to assess and evaluate the site.

ABOUT PRESCRIBED BURNING:
There are multiple benefits to prescribed burning, which is a safe, effective and efficient means of managing the buildup of forest fuels that may contribute to the start and spread of a wildfire. By actively eliminating sources of fuel that exacerbate forest fire risks through a controlled and prescribed burning program, the Forest Fire Service reduces risk to New Jersey residents, visitors and the environment.

Prescribed burns improve habitat for plants and animals, reduce the presence of damaging insects and ticks, and recycle nutrients into the soil. In addition, prescribed burning is an important part of the state’s carbon defense strategy. Allowing experts to choose the intensity, timing and interval of fire across the landscape may help prevent a larger uncontrolled wildfire, which would contribute to significant carbon loss. Typically, most prescribed burns take place between February and early April.
