A Japanese A6M2 Zero lifts off the deck of a Japanese Aircraft Carrier in 1942. 36 Zeros formed the escorting force in the initial raid on Darwin on the 19th of February. Greatly feared by Allied pilots during the opening stages of the Pacfic War, the Zero, whilst fast and highly manoeuvrable at low airspeeds, early models had no armour plate or self sealing fuel tanks, being vulnerable to light gunfire. Indeed Flight Sergeant Hajimi Toyoshima's A6M2 was brought down by a single 303 bullet, crashing on Melville Island on the 19th of February. Image Reference: AWM P02888.002. *Note colourised photo.

Members of the 2nd Australian LofC Postal Unit unloading airmail at Batchelor in 1943. The Lockheed Lodestar is suspected to be "VH-CEE (Delivered to 36 Sqn RAAF on 08 Jul 43. callsign VHCEE; named "Kiwi"). One of 3 ex USAAF Lodestars operated by 37 Sqn on loan to RAAF, the other 2 were not received till after that date". The vehicle is also thought to be a G.S.
