Five months after the deadly school shooting in Uvalde, state leaders announced on Oct. 27 that $874.6 million will be used to improve public safety, with nearly half going toward school security.

The announcement came hours after Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw said he did not plan to resign from his position amid scrutiny following the May 24 school shooting in Uvalde.

Gov. Greg Abbott said that Narcan, which is used to quickly reverse an opioid overdose, should be carried by law enforcement officers and provided to schools. He plans to work with school safety chief John Scott to make the medication available in schools.

The distribution of Narcan, a medication used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, will likely be funded by state lawmakers during the upcoming legislative session or through state criminal justice grants, Abbott said.
