in 1852, playwright and poet Lady Gregory was born in Roxbourough, County Galway.

Isabella Augusta Gregory was born into the Anglo-Irish Persse family. She married the wealthy and landed Lord William Gregory in 1880, even though the man was considerably older than her, and the two had one son together – Robert Gregory. William had interests in Ceylon and in South-East Asia, which required the two to travel quite often.

Through her marriage Lady Gregory was introduced to poets and academics, and certainly after Lord William’s death she was able to pursue her interests in literature and folklore, opening up their estate at Coole Park quite often to poets, playwrights, academics and folklore enthusiasts. It was through her interest in literature that she met the poet and playwright William Butler Yeats. Yeats and Gregory would go on to develop a long-lasting friendship and working relationship, collaborating on a verity of projects and plays. The two founded the Irish Literary Society and the Irish National Theatre Society, which would go on to become the Abbey Theatre.

This year the Abbey Theatre is actually doing a special programme known as the Gregory Project, in which 7 playwrights have been selected to write plays and projects based around Lady Gregory and her work. Check out the Abbey Theatre’s link in order to learn more about this endeavour and the Abbey’s plans for 2024.

Yeats's poem 'Nineteen Hundred and Nineteen' and the incident. The event, including a Q&A session, concludes at 7pm. Admission is free, but advance booking is recommended due to limited seating. /2 Christ the King statue was commissioned by Eileen Coen in 1932 in memory of her son Mattie who died tragically in a motorbike accident. Desmond Coen published the story about the statue in the 2014 edition of the Guaire magazine. The “Burren Lowlands” group secured funding and local architect Brent Mostert was commissioned to “develop a vision of the statue as a focal point in what they(Burrenlowlands) hope will become a rejuvenated space”. The refurbishment started in 2019. Congratulations to all concerned for making this a lovely space in the heart of Gort town.

It was a lovely sunny day as I wandered around Gort’s market day last Friday.Lots of new shop fronts and wall murals bringing colour and vitality to the town. I sit for a while in the sun on the new seating arrangement around the statue of Christ the King in the square. The area around the statue has been refurbished and invites you to have a seat and relax.
