After distinguished career as a Human Rights activist and Advocate and Columnist of repute for more than a decade she was appointed Advisor to Chief Minister Sindh shortly after the PPP-led coalition government took charge. She was elevated as Provincial Minister of Government of Sindh. She is currently working as Secretary Information, PPP Women Wing Sindh, striving for alleviation of poverty, women rights, education reforms, jail reforms and promotion of health services in downtrodden poor localities of Urban and Rural Districts of Sindh. She has taken initiative to provide free legal aid to women prisoners, help computerize record of jails, hold regular medical camps in almost all jails and rural/downtrodden poor areas of Sindh, taken steps to eradicate corruption in jails and get a large number of prisoners released who were languishing in jails for a number of years by paying fines imposed on them by Courts from her own resources. She took giant steps to eradicate cheating and other irregularities in educational examinations which were destroying educational future of youth. Her initiative in this direction has been lauded both in electronic and print media as well as by Governor and Chief Minister of Sindh. She has prepared a report on a fool proof system to ensure complete eradication of cheating and other irregularities in educational examinations which is under review with the Governor and Chief Minister of Sindh. Based on her monumental work in education reforms, Sharmila is an architect of a teacher evaluation programme launched in collaboration with the World Bank by the Education Support Reform Unit of Sindh Government of which she is Vice Chairperson. Under this Scheme all teachers looking to gain employment in government school system in Sindh, must obtain a minimum of 60 % in an evaluation test that is prepared by the Institute of Business Administration, Sukkur. Sharmila and her team have also implemented the Child Nutrition program, whereby all primary school students enrolled in government schools across Sindh are given milk and biscuits during school hours. Sharmila is also keenly working to get Mobile Labs project implemented as “Healthcare services in interior Sindh are poor; people have to travel for hours to reach the nearest hospital. The Mobile Labs project will make it possible for even those in the remotest corner of the province to receive primary health care”. She is also Chairperson of ‘National Peace Committee for Interfaith Harmony’, Sindh, which provides harmony and peaceful co-existence between people of different religions and political affiliations. She is an active Member of the Advisory Board of ‘Drug Free Pakistan Foundation’ an organization established with the cooperation of ‘Narcotics Affairs Section (NAS) of the U.S.A. Embassy for the treatment and rehabilitation of drug addicts. Her door to door voluntary work for the rehabilitation of drug addicts is second to none. She conducts free educational classes for Orphan Girls at Kashana-e Atfal,Karachi, and provide free food and medication to handicapped Children in Darul-Sukoon. She, on the directives of Chief Minister Sindh, is striving to arrange ‘Sasti Roti’ in lower middle class and poor localities of Sindh Districts and establish automated Roti plants in poor localities of each of the Districts of Sindh on long term basis. She is also a fore-runner for the Rights of Women. Her exemplary work for providing justice to women harassment at workplace and provide support & rehablitation of r**e victims, burn victims including their families is monumental. She has also adopted 02 orphan children of a burn victim named Saima. She is grateful to have support of PPP Co-Chairperson and party leaders like Madam Faryal Talpur who heads the PPP’s Women Wing.
