As we gear up for our 7th annual writing contest at Storyshares, it is amazing to reflect on where it all began: a single writing contest – an experiment to test the waters. The very first Storyshares contest launched in 2013. It was, and still is, a project designed to address the lack of engagin...

Big news! Storyshares could be a potential participant of the SXSW EDU 2025 Panel…but we need YOUR SUPPORT to make this happen.

With your vote, Louise Baigelman’s panel will champion the millions of underserved youth voices in education today.

Just 17% of Black students, 21% of Latino students, 11% of students with disabilities, and 10% of multilingual learners can read proficiently by fourth grade (NAEP, 2023). Thus far, no one has cracked the code of how to engage and empower struggling readers to strengthen literacy skills beyond elementary school. We will discuss approaches to literacy instruction that provide equitable access for marginalized students: bridging the Science of Reading with culturally relevant content and digital accessibility, to enable inclusive and targeted interventions for underserved learners.

According to the NAEP reading test, in 2013 only 36% percent of eighth graders were reading at or above grade level. Additionally, over the past three years, average NAEP reading scores for 13 year olds have dropped by 4 points. The National High School Center reports that 70% of high school students need some form of reading remediation. While there has recently been a great deal of attention given to literacy practices in grades K-2, teenagers who struggle with reading are frequently left behind.

This post dives into the Science of Reading as it relates to readers in grades 3+, and offers practical tips and resources specifically for this subset of striving readers. You can find the complete and in-depth resource guide on the Storyshares blog. Click the link in our bio to learn more.
