T-minus one week until we get to celebrate our departing MFA students! The culminating point of the UMSL MFA program is not just the completion of a thesis but also a public reading, which is held once at the end of each semester as a commemorative send-off for our incredibly hardworking, creative, and thoughtful, creative writers.

We hope to see you next Friday, May 10, at the Lee Theater in The Touhill Performing Arts Center. Doors open at 7 pm. We'll have a cash bar, finger foods, and lots of emotions.

In honor of Black History Month, SLAM curators will be leading themed tours during Fridays in February. Each week, one of our curators will highlight different works focusing on Black artists within SLAM's permanent collection.

The first tour is happening this Friday, February 2 from 11 am-noon, led by Melissa Wolfe, Curator of American Art. Melissa will be highlighting works by Black artists Edmonia Lewis, Augusta Savage, and Elizabeth Catlett.

In this work titled Portrait of a Woman, sculptor Edmonia Lewis was skillfully able to convey the taste and beauty of the unknown sitter through the graceful facial features, intricately crafted lace bodice, and elegantly styled hair embellished with a delicate flower. Through her successful early career, Lewis was able to fund her relocation to Rome in 1867 where she resided among fellow American female sculptors such as Harriet Hosmer. It was during this time that Lewis became the first first American of color to achieve international recognition as a sculptor, completing numerous portrait commissions for visitors and patrons in the United States.

Portrait of a Woman is on view in Gallery 336.
