“If I was going to do anything, I wouldn’t be putting it back to stock,” Pete explains. “I was going to have something built that I could enjoy.” He turned to the experts and Blue Sky Performance and Restoration who suggested a 383 Stroker that delivers 414 horsepower at 4,050 rpm and 377 lb-ft of torque at 5,300 rpm at the wheels.

The car has never broken down or had a failure on the road."

Of the 25 ZR1s put together in Corvette’s St. Louis assembly plant, the Laguna Gray coupe featured here is probably the most original to survive. It was delivered new by England-Cook Chevrolet in Lansing, Michigan; is well-documented with its original tank sticker, Protect-O-Plate, and dealer invoice; and when photographed for this feature had traveled just a little bit more than 16,200 miles since day one. The body has never been damaged and still wears most of its original lacquer paint. It’s virtually untouched under the hood, with factory finishes on all surfaces and correctly numbered and dated components throughout.

Schacter realizes that the C4 isn’t necessarily the most sought-after model of Corvette, but his trained eye as a retired architect drew him to the to the simplicity of the shape and ex*****on of details. “I consider the ’84 to ’87 Corvette an exceptional design and don’t understand [the] lack of appreciation [for it],” he says. Before getting into what he likes about the shape, however, a few observations about the structural aspects of the C4 era in comparison with its two preceding generations.

Unlike the Roots-type superchargers most often favored by GM and other original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), centrifugal blowers employ a head unit that is mounted on brackets, separately from the engine, rather than being integrated into the intake manifold. The upsides of this configuration include a lower propensity for power-killing heat soak (we’re looking at you, C7 Z06), as well as a higher maximum-output potential. For the latter reason, they tend to be popular with drag racers competing in “power adder” classes. And while Roots blowers typically make more torque than do centrifugals at lower rpm levels, that’s of comparatively little importance when dealing with a big-inch V-8 like the Grand Sport’s LT1.

**A '65 His Way**
Charlie Burga’s Midyear restomod serves up modern performance and comfort in a thoroughly classic package. Read the complete Article: https://www.corvette-mag.com/issues/156/articles/a-65-his-way

“A friend was in the middle of building a C2 restomod and that caught my eye,” he says. “He encouraged me to build a custom Corvette based on my experience restoring my ’65 convertible.”

Burga had enjoyed refurbishing the Midyear in question but wasn’t especially keen on repeating the process. “The car I restored has loud side pipes and no air conditioning,” he tells us, “so it’s lots of fun for the first hour. After that my six-foot, five-inch frame starts getting leg pains, my ears ring, and the sweat runs down my back.” After seeing what his friend was doing, Burga resolved to build a classic Corvette with the comfort of a new model.

The all-aluminum engine is coupled to a ProFit3 Tremec five-speed gearbox from American Powertrain and shifting is noticeably improved compared with a stock Midyear by virtue of an American Powertrain hydraulic-clutch system

Three of a Kind - A trio of ’63 prototypes from Pete Vicari's (Owner of Vicari Auction) collection provides a rare glimpse into the C2’s pre-production development. Each is a hand-built prototype constructed to develop and validate the design features for the eventual production parts and their tooling. They’re also fascinating examples of living history, offering detailed glimpses at the early processes that helped move the ’63 Corvette from the drafting table to the production line. Delayed Gratification - Russ Stoiber’s wide-body Greenwood tribute is a 700-hp testament to the power of persistence. To date Stoiber has invested nearly $50,000 and countless hours in creating his Greenwood near-replica. “This is my…tribute to John and Burt, to honor their memory and legacy, and to show the next generation of Corvette owners what it was like in the wild days, where creativity was the standard. You had to love it to keep something 47 years and then build your dream car.” Read the complete article https://www.corvette-mag.com/issues/157/articles/delayed-gratification

The Aviator - Mark DiLullo builds an aerospace-grade homage to the high-flying ’63 Grand Sport racer. As a military-trained pilot and owner of Threshold Aviation Group, Inc., DiLullo has throttled up hundreds of jets over the years. So maybe it’s no surprise that he brought this same sort of neck-snapping performance down to Earth for a tribute to the legendary ’63 Corvette Grand Sport. DiLullo’s background also helps explain why the car shown here is not an exacting reproduction, but rather a heady “takeoff” from the original. The starting point for the project was a wrecked, big-block ’67 Sting Ray, into which he would ultimately invest seven-plus years and approximately 6,000 hours of meticulous workmanship. Survival Story - This dual Bloomington honoree is both unusually optioned and stunningly well preserved. Though a lot of ’74 Corvettes were initially produced, only about 15 percent were convertibles. Add in this car’s rare combination of desirable options, especially the big-block engine, four-speed gearbox, and air conditioning, and it’s likely that no more than a couple of hundred like it were made. Of those, very few survive in the condition of this one, making it a highly desirable car indeed. Read the complete article https://www.corvette-mag.com/issues/158/articles/survival-story

Half-Century Hauler - Years after a ruinous autocross mishap, a ’62 racer emerges as a show-winning period custom equipped with an IDIDIT rack-and-pinion power-steering setup, steering column and shifter. Nostalgia has always been a big part of the automotive hobby, with television shows featuring fast or otherwise notable vehicles providing a ready source of inspiration for car-crazed youths. That type of fascination was something that Maurice “Moe” Boetto, a retired postal clerk from Winter Park, Florida, could identify with. His childhood obsession was the Corvette driven by the fictional characters Tod Stiles (played by Martin Milner) and Buz Murdock (George Maharis) as they traveled the show’s titular Route 66. Although the key players interacted with dozens of Hollywood’s A-list actors along the way, most enthusiasts emphatically cite the car as the real star of the program. The Best It Can Be - Gary Licko’s determination to return this 396 coupe to as-new condition paid off in extraordinary fashion. When current caretaker Gary Licko first saw the car, in the swap meet at the 1982 Bloomington Gold Corvettes, it was still equipped with the swapped-in L88. Aside from the engine it was extremely original, not surprising given that it had accumulated only about 17,000 miles. The First Skunk - C4 Grand Sport number 0001 is a well-traveled example of this beloved 1996 high-performance model. By early spring of 1993, the fourth-generation Corvette was nearing its sunset. Concurrently, the upcoming C5 was at a critical point: transition from the engineering-design stage to product development. Consequently, GM’s Corvette team was working overtime, not only to get the C5 ready for its 1997 debut but also to prevent C4 sales from tanking in the meantime. Enter two other Corvette movers and shakers of the era: Brand Manager Dr. Fred Gallasch and GM Design Staff’s Corvette stylist, John Cafaro. Heinricy told us, “Fred and I agreed that a special model was desirable for marketing. Fred wanted a power increase, [so] I took the ball and ran with it. Russ McLean, Corvette Program Manager, pushed Powertrain for the engine upgrades. Cafaro delivered the Grand Sport theme.” Read the complete article https://www.corvette-mag.com/issues/161/articles/the-first-skunk

Scorching. Searing. Ghost-pepper hot. And the weather was pretty toasty, too. We’re describing both the Z06 driving experience at the Ron Fellows Performance Driving School in Pahrump, Nevada, and the sweltering heat dome that hovered over much of the country in mid-July, driving temps as high as 114 degrees in the Mojave Desert. Fortunately the car’s air conditioning and ventilated seats never failed us, and the latest Z06 demonstrated its newfound resilience in a punishing environment, running at triple-digit speeds for hours in triple-digit temps. https://www.corvette-mag.com/issues/166/articles/the-class-of-z06 Spring Mountain Motorsports,
