The wise men were sent to Herod by Aretas IV, king of the Nabateans. King Aretas IV, who is mentioned later in the New Testament, was interested in securing trade routes for the Nabateans' lucrative dealings in Frankincense and Myrrh, but his wise men followed the orbit of a wandering star (today called a planet), which ultimately led them to something much, much greater than an economic asset. It led them to the Savior of humanity.
