Art and mythology converge in the timeless tale of Paris and the Golden Apple. The mythological narrative, filled with divine intrigue and mortal choices, has inspired countless artistic interpretations across various mediums, resonating through the ages as a testament to the enduring allure of classical mythology. The tale of Paris and the golden apple remains a central theme in classical mythology, serving as the catalyst for one of the most renowned conflicts in ancient literature.

The Myth and the Painter, Peter Paul Rubens
Peter Paul Rubens’s interpretation of Paris and the Golden Apple is famously depicted in the painting, “The Judgement of Paris,” completed around 1638. This iconic artwork portrays the mythological tale of Paris, a Trojan prince, tasked with judging the beauty of three goddesses: Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite. Rubens’s masterpiece showcases his mastery of colour, composition, and emotion, capturing the pivotal moment of Paris awarding the golden apple to Aphrodite. The painting is renowned for its portrayal of classical mythology and its enduring influence on later artists, making it a significant contribution to the artistic interpretations of this timeless myth.

“When our perils are past, shall our gratitude sleep?” Maya Angelou

On June 6, 1944, Allied forces launched the largest seaborne invasion in history, known as D-Day. The operation aimed to liberate German-occupied France and ultimately bring an end to World War II. The invasion involved approximately 155,000 troops, with the majority being American, British, and Canadian soldiers.

The operation began with a massive aerial and naval bombardment of the Normandy coast, followed by the landing of troops on five beaches – Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword. Despite facing heavy resistance from German forces, the Allies were able to establish a foothold on the beaches and begin their advance inland.

I am delighted that I am travelling virtually to Annapolis, Maryland, to meet up with Emily Carter, Emily Carter Photography - an award-winning nature and wildlife photographer. Emily believes that art is found in nature through careful observation of the scenery, lighting, and the subject. Through photography, she captures the emotion felt when experiencing a fleeting moment.

Emily and I have known each other ever since she welcomed me to an on-line photography group. I confess being intimidated by the calibre of photographers, but soon felt a kinship and camaraderie within this group. Emily has a passion for nature and her enthusiasm inspired me to take a leap of faith into the world of photography.

How can photography be a way to engage with nature and the environment? How can we preserve, through photography, what was once, but is no more? How can nature photography bring a sense of calm and wellness to our lives? These are the questions that will be discussed today.

“Nature as Art is something that is felt deep within one’s spirit. Hard to express in words, the connection felt when observing and being part of nature brings unity and a sense of peacefulness in …

The complex story of Queen Charlotte and the artist, Thomas Lawrence exemplifies the risks associated with this personal form of artistic endeavour.

The Risk of Portraiture

The art of portraiture is a delicate balance between artistic interpretation and the portrayal of truth.

Portraiture is a challenging art form that carries its share of risks for both the painter and the subject. For the artist, capturing the essence and likeness of the individual while also portraying their personality and character requires great skill and sensitivity.

On the other hand, the subject of the portrait may feel vulnerable during the process, as they entrust the artist with the task of portraying their image for posterity. The portrayal can shape perceptions and leave a lasting legacy, making the stakes high for all involved.

The first official portrait of King Charles III since his coronation was recently unveiled at Buckingham Palace. Renowned British artist Jonathan Yeo is the mastermind behind this striking portraya…

A reading room is a designated space in a home or public area specifically designed for reading and quiet contemplation. It typically contains comfortable seating, good lighting, and shelves for books.

My definition of a reading room, however, is more expansive. Whenever I have a book in hand, I am in reading room. Taking a few minutes, in a busy day, to read gives me something to hold in my mind and provide a boost to continue on my daily tasks.

The Death of Leonardo da Vinci

On May 2, 1519, the world marked the passing of the great polymath Leonardo da Vinci. Three hundred years later in 1818, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres paid tribute to this event through his reimagined painting “The Death of Leonardo da Vinci” , also known as Francis I Receives the Last Breaths of Leonardo da Vinci. This historical piece captures the poignant moment of Leonardo da Vinci’s passing at the Clos Lucé house in Amboise. Commissioned by Pierre Louis Jean Casimir de Blacas, the French ambassador in Rome, this masterpiece now resides in the Petit Palais in Paris.

Emily Carr, a renowned Canadian artist and writer, (1871-1945) was an influential figure in the development of modern art in Canada, especially in capturing the beauty and essence of the Indigenous cultures and landscapes of the Pacific Northwest.

The inclusion of Thomas Hardy’s poignant poem “Afterwards” in the forward of “Growing Pains” invites us to gain a deeper understanding of Emily Carr’s unique perspective and her relentless pursuit of portraying the beauty of the world around her. The poem serves as a profound reminder of her unwavering commitment to noticing and appreciating the small moments that make life meaningful, all while leaving a lasting legacy through her art.

Reims “The City of Kings”

The Notre Dame Cathedral of Reims, also known as Reims Cathedral, is a magnificent example of Gothic architecture. It is located in the city of Reims, France. The cathedral was built in the 13th century and is known for its stunning stained glass windows and intricate stone carvings. The Cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage site and attracts visitors from around the world.

December 25, 496 AD, Clovis, the first king of the Franks, was baptized by the bishop of Reims, Saint-Rémi, at the Reims Cathedral. The bishop anointed the Carolingian King with an ointment from Sainte-Ampoule. This ointment became a tradition for the coronation of Kings in Reims. As a result, Reims earned the nickname “City of Kings” as it was the place where French monarchs were crowned.

Throughout its history, this majestic cathedral witnessed thirty-three sovereign coronations, spanning more than a millennium. This tradition of crowning kings at Reims Cathedral solidified its position as the chosen city for such momentous occasions.

During the 100 Year War, Jeanne d’Arc insisted on crowning King Charles VII at Reims. This act symbolized the power of the French kingdom over the English, with whom they were in conflict. Today, a statue of Jeanne d’Arc stands in the cathedral’s forecourt, commemorating her role in this historic event.
