How good is it when a track nestles its way into your soul to glow eternally like a warm ember? Coming in hot with just such a single is Naarm-based producer Long Lost. The producer's bio describes herself as a bit weird, a characteristic she embraces to guide her to places not often explored. But that doesn't mean alienating audiences all in the name of creative stoicism: "I want people to hear my music and feel the urge to dance and connect".

On the new single 'A Lot of Pretty Friends', the producer stays true to that statement with an exquisite piece of house music that wears its glowing heart on its pretty, frilly sleeve. And that heart is pulsing a garage-infused 4/4 house frequency, lovely sampled strings and a bittersweet piano line that will hook you in like an experienced deep-sea fisherman. 'I wanted to create a symphonic house track that blends elements of electronic dance and UK garage, giving a sense of nostalgia that is bound to appeal to the raver in all of us'.

Well, tickle us nostalgic because we almost cried reliving those halcyon days upon hearing this. A smooth AF video accompanies the video featuring what we assume must be all her friends, dancing and connecting to the lovely rhythms whilst being, of course, pretty. It's so slick it could be a cut scene from HBO's Euphoria. If this is what Long Lost is about, then we're all about Long Lost. Spread the word.

In this day and age of social media and career DJs, Dr. Chicken Gristle is that rare type of creative that is hard to find: a producer who relishes the moment and let ideas flow forth like a fountain. He wields his creativity like a sword, unconcerned about what stands in his way as he chops his way to victory. As soon as you think you have him figured out, he'll drop an inspired bomb that is hard to ignore. Filled with WTF moments, his recent 'FLOATING AS A LIFELESS VESSEL SUSPENDED IN THE AIR' EP is a proud statement of a very provocative producer. ⁠

When you listen to music from artists who ventured beyond the naming quotidian, you know, at the very minimum, you are in for an interesting time: think The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza, Bu****le Surfers or, one of our fave's, Revolting C***s. Amazing. Now add the name of Dr. Chicken Gristle to that list. The name is almost provocative - you have to take notice. And thankfully, we did because this is one doctor we are happy to endorse.

His most recent release, the five-track 'Floating As A Lifeless Vessel Suspended In The Air', is precisely what you would expect from someone who named themselves after poultry cartilage. It's fascinating and eccentric in equal doses.

It features four fun(ky) explorations of a familiar sound that never feels derivative - with just enough balance between organic and electronic to keep everyone engaged. As the producer explains, this is by design: ‘I like to play most of the instruments to give it a looser, more live kind of feel. A more human element.’

She’s a purveyor of all the styles that lift your spirit and nourish your soul - from funk to soul, disco, RnB, hip-hop, electronic, dub, IDM, and downtempo. Any discussions about underrated local DJs should feature the name of AJ Fresh. You could talk about his technical prowess or confidence to command a dancefloor, but it's his track selection that should receive extra attention. Like words in a coherent sentence, he displays an innate ability to pick tracks that make sense next to each other. Across 120 minutes, AJ Fresh proves his credentials with an old-school flavoured exploration of start-of-millennium tech via acid synths, progressive layers and a whole lot of groove.

'I just returned from tour, so I think I was feeling the doof/rave/Europarty sound. CC Disco asked me for a track and patted me on the rump to finish it. I'm happy to be a part of the compilation. Actually, this track was originally titled 'Europarty', and then one night I was DJing, and my friend and I were experimenting with positive sayings - I guess we decided that 'Life is a Delight' was a good saying.'⁠

A FEMALE ARTIST EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW:

My favourite producer currently is Anz, who is based in Manchester in the UK. She has a real talent for adapting old sounds and musical references to her own style, which is really fresh and emotive. Closer to home, Mabel is an extremely hardworking DJ, producer, and promoter. Her skills are genuinely off chops, and you can tell it all comes from her heart as well as her brain.

THE LOCAL INDUSTRY NEEDS MORE:

Government support!! Whether that be federal, state, or council. Naarm (and the rest of the country) has so many brilliant creatives, but we risk losing people to places that have better infrastructure and attitudes towards the arts. Backing for late-night trading and small to mid-size venues would help, and of course financial support for studios/radio stations/people! How are we supposed to develop and thrive if everything is purely dependent on big profits or someone’s pre-existing wealth?

'This was super hard. I had been listening to electronic music since I was about 12. But when Babicka, Freddie Norwood, HVCK and Dass held a party in Adelaide to raise funds for this release, I was smitten. It was the first vinyl I bought, and my relationship with those guys inspired me to start what is now my longest-running occupation. I even base ILIO and a lot of the design/style choices on Untzz still. It was a label of love, friendship and fun. I remember dancing to it for the first time, sharing a few sweaty hugs. Aww. getting teary, sign me off. ' ✨
