RIP Damian Casey 🙏😢

Just desperate news emerging this evening with the tragic passing of a Tyrone GAA Legend - arguably the greatest Tyrone Hurler we have ever seen - passing away with so much living still to be done.

Just weeks after starring in Tyrone’s all Ireland Nicky Rackard Cup Hurling title success, scoring a sensational 0-14 in that All Ireland final triumph, we sadly say goodbye to a GAA star who scored an incredible 38-908 in the Red Hand jersey since making his debut a decade ago, having started in every single Tyrone game (100+) since then 🙌🙌

So sad to hear this news about one of our great Tyrone People, an absolute gentleman.

Sincerest sympathy to Damian’s family and friends, our thoughts and prayers are with you, and GAA colleagues both at Eoghan Ruadh Hurling Club and in the Tyrone camp at this very difficult time 🙏

Stats from Eunan Lindsay.

Michaela McAreavey (nee Harte) was such a wonderful young lady, beautiful both inside and out, whose faith and kindness were overwhelmingly known to anyone who met her. RIP 🙏

Now widely seen everywhere last night was a video displaying the most horrible, nasty and pathetic minds of depraved humanity. Where have human beings minds taken them that they view this as part of any culture?

Having watched the video we can’t share the video itself - it is horrendous. A vile action filled with hatred and bitterness. All against a young woman who was brutally murdered on her honeymoon. Her amazing family of faith have had to awaken to this uproar today knowing the only reason it happened was because she was a young catholic woman. 🥲🥲

Expect widespread condemnation to follow from all sane, balanced people with a conscience.

This hatred and bitterness must stop!!!!

Brilliant goal and victory in Kerry sets up hugely exciting Ulster & All Ireland SFC title defence for TYRONE 💪

You will do well to find more direct attacking football than this - Niall Morgan with a huge kick out, Darragh Canavan with a brilliant catch & sublime pass into Darren McCurry who again displays his unerring class with that turn, burst and finish to the corner of the Kerry net!

Tyrone GAA have finished the league by beating Mayo & Kerry (securing Division 1 status) - Roll on the Championship defence 👊👌🇵🇱

Tyrone GAA legend Peter Canavan and Errigal Ciaran club gather momentum for GAA to bring a return to Under 18 format! AGREED!

Fair play to Errigal Ciaran GAA. Have yet to hear a positive argument for the Under 17 & proposed Under 19 trial grade, which simply do not work in the manner they were expected to. Here's hoping this motion at this weekend's GAA Congress is passed. 👏👏

BRING BACK the Under 18 Grade - read more 👇👇

The under-17 and under-20 competition's have not captured the GAA public's imagination quite like their predecessors.

And that goes for both club and inter-county competitions. Under-12, 14, 16, 18 and 21 age-grades were in place for the guts of 60 years, between 1964 and 2018, and while they weren't perfect - how could they have been when, unlike any other sports, GAA players play in a number of different competitions, for a number of different teams, at the one time - but they were still better than what we have now.

With GAA congress only around the corner, the time for change is now. But the GAA are going the wrong way about it. The central council could be about to make the thing even worse with their motion to bring in an under-19 inter-county grade in 2023. It would be ran alongside the under-20 championship that year - before one of them would be dropped for the next year - but aside from that carnage, the real issue is this.

Minor and under-21 were two tremendous championships that were and valued by all players and supporters. What is the point in getting rid of one of them so underage players only have one chance to represent their county?

Age-grade at club and county level, obviously, go hand-in-hand with one influencing the other and that's why Tyrone club Errigal Ciaran's motion to allow counties to decide on their own underage grades is a huge one. The club, for whom Peter Canavan is the vice-chairperson, sent an email to clubs around Ireland on Tuesday explaining their reasons behind the motion, and the reason they have no faith in that under-19 age-grade.

"We understand that when the change was made to 15, 17, 19, that the intention was that it would improve player pathway with a meaningful U-19 competition key to that success. But, as was called out at the time, the overlap of U-19 with senior/reserves is too great and it is almost impossible to play a prolonged competition at U-19 club level,” the letter stated.

“A particular concern are the perceived weaker lads, who may never enter an adult dressing-room in any event, but who enjoy the training and camaraderie during their underage career,” the letter continued.

"For many lads, their underage club careers are over by their fifth year at school. No underage hurling or football by sixth year, it seems a crazy position."

"We all know two or three lads who are physically developed at that age and can compete. But what about the 10 or 12 who can't? What's left for them? A few under-19 games at the end of the summer if they're lucky."

“At that critical age of 17, their networks are closed a year earlier, from 18 down to 17 years of age. Some of these lads will go on to be the best administrators our clubs ever had, others will drop out as they lose the connection with the club,” the Club Statement continued.

Tyrone Father faces off against son in bid for 2022 MacRory Cup Final place on Friday night.

On Friday night in the Athletic Grounds (7.30pm) in the Ulster Schools GAA Macrory Cup semi final, a Father V Son showdown is very much on the cards.

John McElholm (Manager with St. Mary's Grammar School, Magherafelt) will manage his schools side against Omagh CBS where his son Eoin Mcelholm is one of the star players in their forward line. McElholm who starred for the Tyrone GAA minors in their March to the All Ireland Minor final in 2021 is again seen as an integral player again in the 2022 Tyrone Minor squad as they will soon prepare for an Ulster title defence. But on Friday night he will be hoping to shoot his father and his Magherafelt charges out of the elite provincial schools competition.

In recent months, John McElholm managed Eoin and his Lough Macrory GAA clubmates to the Tyrone GAA minor Grade 1 football championship final, and has largely managed his son Eoin through the juvenile top ranks in Tyrone. John McElholm also managed the Loch Mhic Ruairí Naomh Treasa GAA team to the mid Tyrone club’s only ever Grade 1 Tyrone juvenile title 3 years ago winning the Tyrone Under 14 championship title, where John managed and his son Eoin was captain - and now they are in opposite camps for the Macrory showdown with a provincial decider on the cards for one of them.

Pupils at the Tyrone school have been given free meals throughout the month of December.

St Joseph’s College in Coalisland had not used all of its heating budget because it was closed for parts of the Covid lockdown last year.

Watch the reaction of pupils after the principal decided to put the money towards a “dinner-for-all” scheme.

Some year for KIERAN McGEARY 👏👏🙌

The Pomeroy Plunketts GAC and Tyrone GAA star has celebrated a clean sweep of ‘GAA Footballer of the Year” Awards for 2021…

“It was a far off dream at one stage. Winning the All-Ireland had become more of an ambition, so it did. But I suppose your best has to be expected on the pitch. Luckily mine this year was good enough to be voted for the position that I’m in at the minute. So I’m delighted with it all.”

Tyrone teammate Conor Meyler would have been very close to picking up the award himself, and McGeary revealed that he would have voted for him had he gotten the opportunity.

“I honestly would have had to have gone with Conor. He is a serious warrior of the game and he needs very little introduction. He was a solid person for the top three, but no I definitely would have had to vote for Conor,” McGeary said.

“He’s a massive standard-setter in our team and his attitude on and off the pitch is brilliant and aside from that he’s a good lad. I taught with him, I went to uni with him before, I’ve had plenty of great nights out with him as well.

“He’s full of craic, full of banter. But there’s a massive serious element to him, he wants to achieve in life everything that he does. So he deserves to be there as well.”

TYRONE's rising young soccer star, Conor Bradley, makes competitive debut for Liverpool in tonight's Carabao Cup game against Norwich! 👏 👊

Amazing Achievement! 😮

The Aghyaran 18-year-old also made his senior competitive bow for Northern Ireland in the recent World Cup qualifier against Switzerland.

In lining out for Liverpool's star-studded first team tonight, he also becomes the first Northern Ireland player since Sammy Smyth in 1954 to play a competitive game for the Reds.

Conor Bradley is also pictured with Aghyaran St Davogs GAA Club chairman Sean Byrne as he bid the club farewell just 2 years ago (2019) at the time he made the move to Liverpool.

Conor MEYLER is the PwC GAA/GPA Player of the Month award winner for September.

“Conor played a huge role in delivering Tyrone their first Sam Maguire cup since 2008 on the 11th September, with a sublime diagonal ball to set up Cathal McShane’s goal crucial in helping the Ulstermen overcome Mayo. Conor is the second Tyrone player in a row to win the award following on from the achievements of Kieran McGeary in August.”

Two brilliant Tyrone GAA stars who excelled in 2021 and who look to be the top 2 contenders for the upcoming ‘Footballer of the Year’ accolade which will be announced in October.

McKENNA is only getting started… 👊🇮🇩

There has been some outstanding and hugely enjoyable reading out there as everyone reflects that it is just a week since Tyrone GAA brilliantly bridged a 13 year gap with all Ireland Senior football championship success 🙌

While every player gets back today to the resumption of the much loved club scene, there have been some excellent features and reading on Tyrone’s success and ‘what next?’ - which we will highlight still in the weeks ahead.

To start…

Mayo Andy Moran in his Irish Mirror column made some very interesting and key points on the title triumph:

1. CONOR McKENNA

Still not at his potential best but if Tyrone’s defence were preventing the opposition from scoring goals, McKenna was the man who turned a goalscoring weakness for his team into a strength.
Tommy Rooney, the host of 'The Football Pod' describes McKenna as a moments player - and it was his moments of magic that really drove Tyrone to All Ireland success.
His two goals against Kerry in the All-Ireland semi-final and his driving run and look-away handpass to assist Darren McCurry in the final were simply brilliant, and something Tyrone lacked for years.

McKenna is only getting started.

2. KIERAN McGEARY is Player of the Year

Had a relatively quiet final compared to some of his closest contenders for the crown but his work to get Tyrone to the final can’t be emphasised enough.
To me he is the stand alone contender for player of the year.

3. MANAGEMENT - DOOHER & LOGAN

Joint managers don’t work! First year managers take time to adapt their philosophy to win! These are preconceived notions that Brian Dooher and Fergal Logan have quashed. What a performance by these two men.
They were prepared to lose it all by withdrawing from the championship. They got a reprieve and went on to win it all. Both were outstanding in their roles.

Incredible defensive play by TYRONE ‘blocks’ Mayo’s bid to end 70 years of hurt… 🙌👊

Amazing to reflect on what has been a phenomenal 24 hours for Tyrone GAA and watching back through all the amazing footage, this was a remarkable exhibition of composure, quality football, relentless work-rate and a tactical master class by Tyrone.

And what a game Ronan McNamee had! There were literally 7 or 8 Red Hand players who could have picked up the man of the match gong and the brilliant McCurry was certainly deserving of the official accolade.

But defensively Tyrone were sensational in Croke Park yesterday and this outstanding block by McNamee exemplified all that was good in the Ulster champions approach. The famous Conor Gormley block in the 2003 decider stands out as one of the great Tyrone GAA moments but this quality piece of defending by the Tyrone full back yesterday was almost missed in what was a superlative all-round defensive performance.

The RTE Team of the Year last night and now in the build-up to the actual GAA/GPA Allstars will garner plenty of debate, but they will do well to pick an all star team without McNamee in the centre of it!

For now though let’s just relish this fantastic milestone in the history of Tyrone GAA 🙌🙌🙌🇮🇩

In just their first year as joint managers, just as Mickey Harte had done 18 years earlier in 2003, Brian Dooher and Fearghal Logan have followed Ulster Senior Championship success with an incredible all the way All Ireland Senior Championship triumph! 😮❤️🇮🇩🙌🙌

For Brian Dooher he adds this All Ireland as Manager to the 3 All Irelands he won as a player - 2 of those as Captain.

He is just the 5th GAA man in history to win Sam as a captain and a manager - joining a list with Kevin Heffernan, Tony Hanahoe, Paudi O’Shea and Billy Morgan. Only 12 men have ever won the all Ireland as both a player and a manager 🙌

Congrats - True LEGEND.

Sam returns to TYRONE 👊🇮🇩🙌🙌

Second half goals from Cathal McShane and Darren McCurry proved crucial as Tyrone ended a 13 year wait to claim the All Ireland Senior football championship title on a 2-14 to 0-15 score line.

After going two down in the opening minutes, Tyrone moved ahead through Morgan from a 47m free, Hampsey superbly from play, after a pass from his full back line colleague McNamee, and then a converted Darren McCurry free.

A brilliant goal line block from Niall Sludden denied Mayo an opening goal on 15 minutes before Donoghue levelled for Mayo, at 0-3 apiece before McCurry delivered a brilliant score to send Tyrone ahead again just before the water break.

Donohue levelled again but an excellent point from the outstanding McGeary sent Tyrone 0-5 to 0-4 ahead on 20 minutes.

It was a frenetic tussle in the opening half but Niall Sludden cut in for a brilliant Tyrone point on 27 minutes to move the Ulster champions ahead and Mattie Donnelly added a top class follow up as Tyrone edged two ahead, 0-7 to 0-5.

With 30 minutes on the clock Conor McKenna then sent McCurry in for the golden goal chance but Hennelly saved as Morgan then stepped up to convert the resulting 45. Tyrone now three ahead, 0-8 to 0-5.

Donoghue and McCurry then traded frees, as Tyrone maintained the three point advantage, 0-9 to 0-6, and centre back hit a big point on 36 minutes which was also quickly cancelled out by Niall Sludden at the opposite end. A Donohue free concluded the first half scoring and Tyrone maintained a 0-10 to 0-8 advantage going in at the break.

All to play for in the second half 👊

There was early end to end drama at the start of the second half and none more so than Donoghue driving his penalty kick off the post and wide. And as the penalty was missed, Cathal McShane entered the fray to replace Donnelly and what an impact - 1 minute later the Owen Roes man flicks a Conor Meyler pass to the net. A 1-10 to 0-9 lead now with 45 minutes gone.

Mayo continued to chip away at the lead as the game entered the third quarter but when Kilpatrick rose for an amazing catch and set up his club colleague, McCurry made no mistake as he palmed to the net snd pushed Tyrone five ahead, 2-10 to 0-11.

Keegan and Donoghue added Mayo points and there was again three between but a big run by Harte brought a free which Peter Harte converted - 2-11 to 0-13.

An excellent fi**ed point from Darragh Canavan cancelled out one from Conroy as the final entered the last three minutes of normal time, Tyrone thus leading 2-12 to 0-14 on 67 minutes.

Darragh Canavan then saw his goal attempt saved but McCurry was on hand to send the rebound over the bar. Niall Morgan converted his 3rd of the day and Tyrone moved six ahead 2-14 to 0-14.

Ultimately it was a final Tyrone looked exceptionally composed in and never really looked in trouble. There were so many brilliant performances throughout the team, from Morgan and the superb McNamee at the back to Harte, Kennedy, Kilpatrick, Meyler and McCurry outfield. The official man of the match will be announced at tonight’s Banquet in the Armagh City Hotel and there are a lot of contenders. No doubt about it!

Sam number 4 for TYRONE! ❤️🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩🙌

KIERAN McGEARY - What a season this man is having 👊🙌🇮🇩

The Pomeroy Plunketts GAC clubman has been simply sensational for Tyrone GAA in the incredible run to the All Ireland Senior football final and his performance against Kerry was unreal. The dynamic McGeary literally covered every inch of Croke park in that famous semi final win, and was on the ball an outstanding 40 times in the game - the highest by any player on the day.

Of course we’d like to see more of the same in the Sam Maguire Cup decider this Saturday Kieran 💪

Incidentally, McGeary is now the 3/1 favourite to be crowned as the 2021 GAA/GPA Footballer of the Year!

OK just loving this… one of those moments in life when you go - is it happening?
…and then you realise Tyrone just turned in one of those incredible performances (like the Noughties but this is unique and new to the 2021 squad - it’s just theirs) and we sent those raging hot favourites - KERRY - packing. Now we face a Mayo side who everyone wants to win an all Ireland after 70 years of hurt, we know they will take some stopping but you just know….. well…

Well Sam might be on the way back to Tyrone!
Cuthnert Donnelly may get the car serviced! 😀

Well thank you lads 🙌🙌🙌 no matter what unfolds now - GAA is a winner!

TYRONE Minors power to All Ireland final date with the Royals… 🇮🇩🇮🇩👊👊

Tyrone minors continue to impress this season and a dominant display setup a fantastic All Ireland semi final victory over Cork in Tulamore. That 0-23 to 1-6 victory now means the Tyrone minors will take on Meath in the all Ireland final, before the Tyrone v Kerry Senior semi final at Croke Park on Saturday next.

Eoin McElholm opened the scoring and
Tyrone defended superbly in that early period, with a super block Callan Kelly and impressive play from Ronan Fox and Shea O’Hare in particular standing out. Pointed frees from Hugh Cunningham and Ronan Cassidy before O’Connor (2) and Cassidy exchanged scores and a brilliant Cormac Devlin point made it 0-5 to 0-2 at the first water break.

A brilliant move and point from Eoin McElholm on the resumption was followed a superb Gavin Potter run and after he was foot blocked, Shea O’Hare stepped up and had his penalty kick expertly saved by Daniel Walsh in the Cork goal, his third fine save in 10 minutes. Another O’Connor point made it 0-6 to 0-3 on 20 minutes.

Superb defending by Ronan Fox at one end led to an excellent Ruairí McHugh point at the other and a Hugh Cunningham converted free saw the Ulster Champions move five ahead. Ronan Strain got a fine score on 27 minutes and Cassidy added a free to put Tyrone 0-10 to 0-3 ahead at half time.

Corks Hugh O’Connor and Conor Owens exchanged pointed frees on the resumption as Tyrone led 0-11 to 0-4. Excellent play from McElholm and a Conor Owens point saw Tyrone move eight ahead on 39 minutes before a superb move, following excellent work by Cormac Devlin, saw Cassidy through on goal only for Walsh to pull off another excellent save.

McElholm added an excellent third point from play before super-sub Conor Owens fired over a 45metre free as Tyrone went nine ahead at the end of the third quarter.

Conor Owens, who continued to cause havoc in the Cork defence, added his 4th point from a free before Ronan Cassidy again saw his shot at goal saved by Walsh. Cassidy also added his fourth point from a free and Eoin McElholm scored a fantastic fifth from play as Tyrone led 0-17 to 0-5 on 56 minutes.

Eoin McElholm, who possibly shaded the man of the match accolade from 6-7 Tyrone players, made it five from play on the day with a left footed point and Jack Martin added further points as Tyrone moved 0-20 to 0-5 on 59 minutes before a late goal from Crowley left 12 between them. Cassidy and Jack Martin (2) continued to top up the scoreboard as Tyrone ran out emphatic winners over the Rebels by 0-23 to 1-6.

Congratulations to Lough Macrory and Tyrone GAA rising young star, Eoin Mcelholm who has been announced as the Electric Ireland All Ireland Minor Football Player of the Week 👏

The young player, who is just 16 years of age and who will be in the minor ranks again in 2022, turned in a fantastic all-round display in Tyrone’s excellent Ulster Minor football championship final win over Donegal.

The minors next travel to Tulamore, Offaly, this Saturday 21st August to take on Munster Champions, Cork, in the all Ireland Minor Championship semi final. Good luck 🇮🇩👊
