Former Uber Security Chief Joo Sullivan has been convicted of covering up a cyberattack, compromising data of over 57 million people, in 2016, The Verge reported.

According to The Verge, a hacker downloaded the personal information of more than 57 million people, including their names, email addresses, and phone numbers for more than 50 million Uber riders and 7 million drivers, as well as driver’s license numbers for another 600,000 drivers.

The jury convicted Sullivan on two counts: one for obstructing justice by not revealing the breach to the FTC and another for misprision, which is concealing a felony from the authorities, the New York Times and Washington Post reported.

CALIFORNIA: Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp is testing a new tool that will bar users from taking screenshots of media/messages that are marked as ‘view once’ content.

According to a report by WaBetaInfo, WhatsApp has started rolling out a new beta version 2.22.22.3 for the messaging platform on Android.

The new tool that prevent users from taking screenshot and screen recording for view once images and videos was available to some beta testers. The feature is expected to reach users soon.

How will this feature work?

As the name suggests, the View Once or Disappearing messages feature allows users to share photos or videos only once. When WhatsApp launched View Once, many users criticised it because people were taking screenshots of such messages.

is gradually making the edit button available for its paid subscribers in the United States, the social media company said on Thursday, days after launching the widely requested feature in Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
Twitter users have for years demanded the ability to edit their tweets after publishing them, mostly to fix errors such as typos.

However, Twitter and its observers have debated whether allowing tweets to be edited could lead to harmful effects, such as the spread of misinformation.

Subscribers who pay $4.99 per month for Twitter Blue will be able to edit their tweets “a few times” within 30 minutes of publication, Twitter said in September.

They currently have access to a feature that holds tweets for up to one minute, allowing users to review the tweet and “undo” it before the post is published.

Edited tweets will have an icon and timestamp to display when the post was last edited. Users will be able to click on the label of an edited tweet to view the edit history and previous versions of the post.

San Francisco-based Twitter is currently trying to reach an agreement after months-long litigation, with billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, who proposed to buy the social media company in a $44 billion deal earlier this year.

BUENOS AIRES: Argentina captain • Lionel Messi • on Thursday said that the 2022 World Cup in Qatar will “surely” be the last of his career.

“It’s my last World Cup, surely. I feel good physically, I was able to do a very good pre-season this year, which I couldn’t do last year. It was essential to get to where I am, with a good state of mind and a lot of hope,” the 35-year-old told ESPN Argentina.

Messi, who is due to appear in his fifth World Cup, made his international debut in 2005 and has since won 164 caps for Argentina and is the country’s all-time record scorer with 90 goals.

In the interview, which took place in Paris where Messi plays for Paris Saint-Germain, he admitted he was nervous about the impending tournament.

“There is anxiety, nerves about the World Cup,” he said. “We can’t wait for it to start.”

Messi’s international debut as a substitute against Hungary in 2005 lasted just two minutes before he was sent off but he qu**ky established himself in the national team set-up and travelled to Germany for his first World Cup in 2006.

Elon Musk asked a US judge Thursday to suspend Twitter ’s lawsuit over their troubled takeover negotiations after the embattled social media company balked at the Tesla’s chief’s demand to freeze the litigation.

Musk’s request comes two days after the unpredictable billionaire revived his takeover plan, following an earlier withdrawal from the $44-billion transaction that prompted Twitter to file suit in Delaware court. The trial is scheduled to start on October 17.

Reports said Tuesday that Elon Musk offered to push through with his buyout of Twitter at the original agreed price, just weeks before the opening of a bitter court case over his effort to withdraw from the deal.

US media said the world’s richest man had sent a letter to Twitter vowing to honor the takeover price of $54.20 a share — prompting a surge in the share value of the social network that triggered a suspension of trading.

The latest twist in the long-running buyout saga comes less than two weeks before the start of the high-stakes trial instigated by Twitter in an effort to hold the Tesla chief to the $44 billion deal he signed in April.

SEOUL: North Korea fired two ballistic missiles on Thursday as it claimed its recent blitz of sanctions-busting tests were necessary countermeasures against joint military drills by the United States (US) and South Korea.

As the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) met to discuss Pyongyang’s Tuesday launch of an intermediate-range ballistic missile over Japan, North Korea blamed Washington for “escalating the military tensions on the Korean peninsula”.

The recent launches — six in less than two weeks — were “the just counteraction measures of the Korean People’s Army on South Korea-US joint drills,” Pyongyang’s foreign ministry said in a statement Thursday.

Seoul, Tokyo and Washington have ramped up joint military drills in recent weeks, including large-scale naval manoeuvers and anti-submarine exercises.

The deaths of dozens of young children in Gambia from acute kidney injuries may be linked to contaminated cough and cold syrups made by an Indian drug manufacturer, the World Health Organization has said.

The findings, announced by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, followed tests on several medicinal syrups that were suspected of causing 66 child deaths in the tiny West African country.

Tedros told reporters that the U.N. agency was conducting an investigation with Indian regulators and the company that made the syrups, New Delhi-based Maiden Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

Police in Mumbai said on Thursday they had detained one person from India’s eastern state of Bihar after threat calls to billionaire Mukesh Ambani ’s family that controls the telecoms-to-clothes Reliance Industries conglomerate.

In February last year, a car laden with explosives was found near the Ambani home. The purported owner of the vehicle was later found dead, with police treating his death as suspicious.

Reliance said a call centre run by a company foundation’s hospital received two phone calls on Wednesday threatening to blow up the hospital and kill Ambani, his wife Nita and sons Akash and Anant. The caller also threatened to blow up the Ambanis’ high-rise family residence Antilia in Mumbai.

“Acting swiftly in the incident of threat calls to Ambani family, a team of Mumbai Police has detained a person from a block in Darbhanga, Bihar at midnight with help of Bihar Police,” Mumbai police said in a statement.

Four members of a California family, including an 8-month-old girl, were found dead in a rural area on Wednesday after they were abducted in the city of Merced on Monday, authorities said.

The victims were identified as the baby, Aroohi Dheri, who was abducted along with her mother, Jasleen Kaur, 27, her father, Jasdeep Singh, 36, and the baby’s uncle, Amandeep Singh, 39. Police say the four were abducted on Monday morning from the family’s trucking company in Merced, about 150 miles (240 km) east of San Jose.

“Tonight our worst fears have been confirmed. We found the four people from the kidnapping and they are in fact deceased,” Merced County Sheriff Vernon Warnke said in a media briefing.

Describing the incident as “horribly senseless”, Warnke said that the motivation for the crime was not known yet, adding that they were alerted by a farm worker.

Authorities in Merced County said Jesus Manuel Salgado, 48, was a suspect in the family’s deaths and was in custody. They were attempting to speak with Salgado, who was hospitalized after trying to kill himself before being taken into custody, to determine whether another person was involved, Warnke had said during a news conference on Wednesday morning.

NEW YORK: US President Joe Biden said Russian President Vladimir Putin’s threat to use nuclear weapons is the biggest such threat since the Cuban Missile Crisis, as Russia’s military leadership faced a rare domestic public backlash over the war in Ukraine.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Ukraine’s forces were swiftly recapturing more territory especially in the south of the country as Putin’s seven-month invasion unravels.

Biden said the United States was “trying to figure out” Putin’s off-ramp from the war, warning that the Russian leader was “not joking when he talks about potential use of tactical nuclear weapons or biological or chemical weapons, because his military is, you might say, is significantly underperforming”.

According to details, Ishaq Dar along with his counsel – Qazi Misbah – appeared before the accountability court today, seeking cancellation of the arrest warrant issued in a corruption reference filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

During the hearing, the finance minister’s counsel urged the court to cancel the confiscation order of his client’s property. Qazi Misbah noted that the arrest warrants were issued to ensure Ishaq Dar’s appearance in court.
Judge Muhammad Bashir asked if had NAB issued any warrants for Ishaq Dar. To which, the investigation officer replied in affirmative, saying that warrants were suspended.

The accountability bureau decided not to oppose cancellation of Ishaq Dar’s arrest warrant. “The federal minister has now appeared before the court, we have no objection if warrants are cancelled,” the NAB prosecutor said.

The New Iphone 14 plus went on sale around the world including India on Friday, bringing a mid-range 6.7-inch iPhone model to the masses for the first time. Until now, the 6.7-inch screen size was limited to the high-end iPhone Pro Max, thus limiting the big-screen iPhone experience to Pro users. The iPhone 14 Plus joins the rest of the iPhone 14 lineup, which includes the standard iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

In India, which is slowly becoming Apple’s fastest-growing market in Asia, the iPhone 14 Plus starts at Rs 89,900. And if you want the larger 256GB and 512GB storage capacity, you will need to spend Rs 99,900 and Rs 119,900 respectively. The standard iPhone 14, on the other hand, starts at Rs 79,900. That makes it the least expensive 6.7-inch iPhone ever released, but it’s far from being affordable.

Freelancing is becoming popular throughout the globe as a full-time profession. Freelancers are their own bosses, they select projects that interest them and work on their own deadlines. As for the freelance industry in Pakistan, it is growing at a rapid pace as well.

Given the increasing global competition, freelancing in Pakistan reportedly earned a whopping $397 million dollars in FY 2021-2022 at a growth rate of 2.74%. Of the total export earnings through freelancing, the IT-related export earnings were $265.444 million, while non-IT-related export earnings were $131.884 million.

Apart from the flexibility that freelancing offers, more and more individuals were attracted to the industry during the pandemic. Several companies saw losses and had to shut down their operations or downsize employees. This is where the freelancing industry proved to be really helpful to those in dire need of professional work.

Bashir Memon, the former director-general of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), on Wednesday confirmed being locked inside a washroom at PM House on former prime minister Imran Khan's orders.

The allegations were made by a hacker on Twitter, which were confirmed by Memon during an interview to a private news channel.

The inside details of a meeting between Khan and the former cop were shared by the hacker in a series of now-deleted tweets.

It was claimed that the former DG FIA was locked in a washroom at PM House and pressurised to follow Imran Khan’s orders.

Responding to the claim, Memon confirmed that Khan used abusive language towards PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz which infuriated him and he responded harshly.

At this, Memon added, the then-principle secretary of PM Azam Khan grabbed his hand, took him out of the room and locked him in the washroom.

"Azam Khan then scolded me over my conduct with the prime minister," said Memon.

The government has formed a high-powered committee to probe into audio leaks from PM House that have raised questions over its cyber security.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and the United Nations jointly launched Tuesday a flash appeal in Geneva for US$816 million, up from $160 million, on the basis of updated on-ground need assessment of the flood situation in the country.

While stressing upon immediate global help, Minister for Climate Change Sherry Rehman, who was present in Geneva, said that Pakistan could not afford to spend more on recovering from devastating climate-induced floods. She told the conference that the world was facing an accelerated global warming issue. “It is becoming clear to all that this is the climate event of the century.”

“The scale of the catastrophe is more than existential. We are gathered here to reboot your compassion simply because the numbers are too staggering to serve any country alone,” she maintained.

Minister Sherry pointed out that it was a real race against time for Pakistan. “Winter is fast approaching, people are left at the mercy of open skies, about 7.9m are still scrambling for dry land.”

Addressing the party leaders and workers in Peshawar on Tuesday, he said that everyone must take part in the long march, considering it a form of Jihad. However, he didn't give a date for the event.

Everyone must come out for their future because this is a turning point for the nation, he said.

"The country is being ruled by thieves who have been looting the national exchequer for 30 years."

The former prime minister said he had no grudge or dispute with anyone, including the Sharif and Zardari families. "I have taken a stand for the future of the nation," he said.

"In the past, the corrupt coterie got their thefts waived off after taking an NRO. They caused the national debt to skyrocket four times within ten years," Imran said, speaking about the leaders of the coalition government, who he termed the "imported government."
