Another rainy day record (references to the sun notwithstanding). Lotsa crunchy & swirly drone, other than standard grunge, angst & despair. The whole record sounds like a train leaning hard toward the dirt, yet Steve Hindalong's production holds it to the rails. It's a fantastic mid-90's album, in fact, as Mercury absorbs and synthesizes alternative rock to that point, but doesn't sound remotely like the big grunge/alt-rock acts of the time. Doesn't sound like CCM, either. Best experienced by full immersion and accompanied by a deep, rich, and slightly bitter drink (I'm having coffee myself, but red Bordeaux or Barolo suggest themselves for late night listening).

Some misdirection in the lyrics notwithstanding, this is a great cloudy day record. Lotsa great albums released in '93—Counterparts, The Red Shoes, Motorcycle, World Gone Wrong—but if Kissers And Killers ain't on your list, you missed a big one. Swirly, angular, abrasive, full of huge Tim Chandler bass lines and Hindalongian romanticisms, so much texture from Derri's pedals and Dan's winds that it'd cut you if you could touch it; almost too alternative for alternative rock. Turn "Weather Girl" up to 13.

My library lends records! My library lends COOL records!

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard became a deep dive for me last half of 2023, and they remain a frequent musical joy. Nonagon Infinity is nonstop (really—that's the concept) proggy fun.

Wow, what an...er...*in-between* unpolished gem of a Rush album. Not in my Top Ten but not at the bottom of the list either; famously a commercial hiccup in their career but a proclamation of creative ambition that the band stood behind from day one. And really, versus other 'PROG' albums released in 1975, not a bad effort *at all*. I mean, I've listened to Caress Of Steel plenty of times, but I've yet to make it from start to finish through The Lamb Lies Down (and I LOVE Genesis)...

Compositionally, it's all quite good with the exception of some patchwork-seams on "Lamneth," the playing is exciting throughout, and you quite simply do not get A Farewell To Kings without the band finding their sea legs on Caress of Steel.

Good opportunity to pair my Grado cartridge with my Xmas gift of headphones, a bit of Viognier (pronounced YUH-MEE) for accent.

Bit of reading, Bit of listening. The Holy Triumvirate, but as Three Distinct Persons.

The Envy of None record is so good and particularly suited for winter and discomfort. There's a lot of air in the record, but it's alternately heavy or suddenly thin; stickily warm then quietly icy; blusteringly sardonic before gently seductive. Soundscapes and atmospherics, but maybe not what you'd think that means.

Far and Near is wonderful in its wide-ranging scope coupled with homely cheerfulness. It's almost impossible to avoid a fair bit of sadness at this point, but there's a determined optimism in Neil's observations that inspires.

I've just started in on Geddy's Effin' Life but it's already both devastating and hilarious. It feels incredibly timely in its foregrounding of culture and ethnicity under hostile circumstances—there's a wonderful "the larger bowl" filled with awesome details for the Rush fan. And there's footnotes, which thrills me.

Merry Rushmas, Everyone!

I received two copies of Fly By Night—both the 2015 remaster, but one a US pressing and the other a Mexican pressing. Very cool to compare the two (US on the left and Mexican on the right in the first photo; 2nd photo is US, 3rd photo is Mexican).

The US cover looks a bit darker with maybe a slightly larger owl; the record itself is slightly heftier with the thicker squared edge, while the Mexican pressing has the rounded sharp edge and much cleaner wax right out of the sleeve. The sound is pretty similar on both, with the US pressing maybe a hair wider in scope and the Mexican pressing both punchier on the low end and more vibrant in the quiet bits. Both show off the remaster proudly.

Well, after mentioning Unfold The Future as the *other* best album of Progressive Rock's 'modern' era (the Third Wave, as they say), I feel it's time for a listen. Honestly, this album is a challenging listen—it's just sooooooo loooooong—but the 'more is never enough' approach places this alongside Tales From Topographic Oceans as a singular epic auditory experience that cannot be distilled to highlights or singles.

Bridge Across Forever is very likely the finest Progressive Rock album of the 'modern' era (Unfold The Future and Proxy are my picks for strongest challengers). "Duel With The Devil" is in the echelon of "Close to the Edge" and "Dancing With The Moonlit Knight" as best Prog album opener, and "Stranger In Your Soul" is *the* finest album closer of all time, across genres.

Worst liner notes design, though.

With strong competition to be sure...I will be surprised if The Crowned does not place as my pick for Best Album of 2023. Playing to every one of Che's many strengths, produced to perfection, sonically saturated—I never don't want to hit repeat on a song.

Aaaaaannnnnnnddd...best Side 2 of all time. You have a High Fidelity-esque list of "Top 5 Side 2s," "Top 5 Live Albums," "Top 5 Drum Fills,"—all those important lists, right?

Love that Abbey Road Side 2 Medley...listened last night to the 2019 mix, "The Long One" take, and Transatlantic's live cover as "Suite Charlotte Pike Medley." Listening now to the 2008 vinyl remaster.

And as far as great medleys go: I love a great blended Scotch. This Barrowman's 25yr for me outperforms its Johnnie Walker counterparts. Very low earthy peat, almond brittle, stewed figs, honeyed malt, mellow & rich throughout.

I know what I like in your live album...

Best live album of all time? Seconds Out is where I'll place my vote. Four perfect sides, including gorgeous renditions of "Firth of Fifth," "Afterglow," and "Supper's Ready," capped off by the epic closer pairing "Dance On A Volcano" with "Los Endos." Where else are you gonna hear drumming by Chester Thompson AND Bill Bruford AND Phil Collins all in one place?

Still on the Chagall Guevara kick. Killer opener here with "Tale O' The Twister" followed by "Violent Blue," nicely mixed throughout like it's just a really solid soundboard recording. Love the covers in the encore.

A long-delayed "studio project" from John Elefante, Mastedon 3 sounds fairly like a (much better) follow-up to Drastic Measures. Just needs some violin or saxophone. "One Day Down By The Lake (See You Real Soon)" would have made a great early-2000's Spock's Beard track if the lyrics were a bit more generic in their religiousity. Could make for a fun future Morsefest appearance...

They came, they saw, they put out the best album of the 90's, then they were gone (as a band entity—the individual members continued doing great musical things). But even the fragments of their implosion shine superbly. Halcyon Days, indeed.

Maria's voice is always scintillating, then and now. With this band, at this early time, two years before the self-titled debut—the tenuous and the brash blend perfectly, resulting in magic much like The Byrds live in the early 70's.

Alice Cooper is one of my favourites, but the albums are definitely inconsistent in quality, right from the first. I am happy to report that Road is front to back solid Alice Gold, with a couple career-worthy songs, no clunkers, and awesome sound. Best since 2008 for sure, but with the superior production from Bob Ezrin, maybe his best since 1994.

Even in the liner notes, Heard seems almost apologetic: : "Coming in Autumn 1984- new rock 'n roll release from Mark Heard." Yet, Ashes & Light best prefaces the immortal final three albums he made, most deeply expressed the artistry of this artist.

The Band was one of the first dozen records I purchased after getting my turntable. The leads on "All Along The Watchtower" & "Highway 61 Revisited" from the Before The Flood (Tour '74) album are among my all-time favourite guitar performances. The Last Waltz is the greatest concert film of all time, and I don't think a month goes by that I don't hear Robbie Robertson's voice in my head saying "It's a goddam impossible way of life." And I'll always love that he went through with bronzing that guitar. It looked as cool as it was insane.

10/06/2023

Wow. That is my first & ongoing reaction to the Extreme resurgence.

The most exciting and most-discussed guitar solo since when? The best Roger Daltrey-esque performance since when? Best straight-up "we are here to rock you" band performance video since when? And that's just the first single and opening track, "Rise."

Most of the following album is every bit as good or even stronger than "Rise." " " features biting lyrics, truly interesting vocal/melodic phrasing, and Cherone NOTE FOR NOTE SINGING THE OPENING OF THE GUITAR SOLO. "Hurricane" is the most beautiful and moving song of the entire Extreme discography, "Save Me" resurrects the introspective spirituality of sides 2 & 3 of "III Sides To Every Story," and "X Out" is an *incredibly* composed and produced piece of...progressive industrial? Throughout, yes, it's cool how forward & unique each of Bettencourt's solos are, but we're also hearing great songs, great vocals, great harmonies, great floor-smashing-low-end grooves & rhythmic flourishes.

There's really only one flaw on Six, and that's "Beautiful Girls." I'm not even saying it's a bad song (it probably is, but I'm not saying it)—I'll just note that this song only makes sense as a hidden track on a CD copy of Saudades de Rock, and it needs to go back to 2008 and stay there. Still has me saying "wow," in its own head-scratching way.

So yeah, in almost every way, Extreme Six is my favourite everything about music in 2023. If you still had faith in rock and roll, it's rewarded here. If you need your faith restored, this is the answer to your prayers. And if you've somehow never been initiated? Never had your face absolutely *melted* by a guitar solo or your very being reshaped by a riff? Wow, here you go.

"Dum-dums though the titular duo be, the real joke—the gleeful exuberance of the characters and of their franchise—lies in the abandoned tenacity that allows them to overcome the obstacle of time itself, to defeat even death itself, to assemble a team of compatriots, ascend to heaven, and return with the gift of rock ‘n’ roll."

Over the last, say, four years, my work & family commitments have commanded time & energies such that my previous record-purchasing-and-listening activities took a serious backseat. So, even though The Choir are one of my all-time favourite bands, I just was not available when this album was released.

But, thanks to the kindness of my parents, I have this gorgeous vinyl ready-to-hand as I slowly re-incorporate vinyl back into my self-care/weekly rest/lifeblood. My Deep Cuts may be different in specifics from those of the band members, but I've surely got them, and anyone I've known or even heard of has them too. Definitely tears on "Aces Over Eights."

This is post-Flap Your Wings The Choir as you might expect, a bit less rocking than How The Mighty Have Fallen or Burning Like The Midnight Sun, more concise than Shadow Weaver, but every bit as rich as any of it. Tim is missed for sure, but Dan comes forward with extra texture and as I look out the window, yes, this is a perfect rainy-day record. If you need to set bearings, call it The Loudest Sound Ever Heard Part 2.

The Scarabus has become a favourite whisky—classic Islay in both island & peat character, affordable, no false scarcity or inflated pricing. The 10 Year expression softens the smokiness to a medium-level while emphasizing sea spray & underlying fruitiness. Very Ardbeggish in quality; rewarding of slow & longish sips.

Thrown into the world, projecting into a future through an effervescent present. Time is everything and nothing, so I take it however I can. I hope you do, too.

Lovely to finally sit down with this LP 30-something years later. When I first got a turntable, this was one of the handful of albums I had in mind for such an experience, but I never did fork over the secondary/import prices.

The newly remastered vinyl is nicely quiet, a bit less punky-grungy than the CD/streaming experience, almost a bit more laid-back 'in the groove'. Awesome packaging, with the embossed jacket a nice touch.
