On Thursday, a federal judge ordered the Trump administration to fully fund this month's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program by today, effectively blocking the administration's plan to provide reduced benefits during the ongoing government shutdown.

Also on Thursday, Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley's office offered further details on the city's partnership with the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan to provide food vouchers to SNAP beneficiaries and federal employees affected by the uncertainty surrounding their payments, which remain in limbo as the Trump administration immediately said it will appeal the judge's ruling.

The University of Michigan-Flint will host “Cracks in the Pavement,” a free community symposium on Nov. 6, with the aim of exploring how residents and area organizations “are reimagining democratic participation beyond conventional forms of governance to foster new cultures of democracy.”

During the day-long event, EVM's editor, Kate Stockrahm, will join Jiquanda Johnson of Flint Beat and Tia Scott of Flintside in a panel discussion on local journalism and democracy, moderated by Scott Atkinson.
